Author Description

罗曼·罗兰（1866—1944），法国思想家、文学家。他凭借长篇小说《约翰·克里斯托夫》获得1913年法兰西学院文学奖，后因其“文学作品中的高尚理想与在描绘各种不同类型人物所具有的同情和对真理的热爱”而获得1915年诺贝尔文学奖。他为让世人“呼吸英雄的气息”，替具有巨大精神力量的英雄树碑立传，把不同时期写就的三部传记（《贝多芬传》《米开朗基罗传》和《托尔斯泰传》）汇集成一册，题为《英雄传记》，也就是为我们今天所称道的世界衔己文学的典范之作《名人传》。

《国民阅读经典：名人传（全译本）》：
贝多芬在忧伤深渊里，却谱写出了满怀希望得到欢乐的音乐。
贝多芬一直以来都在规划自己的历程。从1793年波恩开始，贝多芬就按计划进行创作。他一直想要创作一部歌颂欢乐的乐曲，并希望把它作为所有大作的终曲。在后来的创作中，贝多芬不断探索，怎样把歌颂欢乐的形式穿插在作品中。但是，他一直没拿定主意。即使在《第九交响曲》中，他还是在犹豫没有最后下决心。
贝多芬直到最后一刻还准备把《欢乐颂》放到第十或第十一交响曲里去。值得注意的是，《第九交响曲》并不是像大家所说的，题名为《合唱交响曲》，而是题名为《以欢乐颂为终曲的合唱交响乐》。从这一点看来，《第九交响曲》可能差一点儿就有了另一种结尾。
贝多芬直到1823年7月还在探索把《欢乐颂》放进交响曲的方法，他甚至打算用乐器演奏《第九交响曲》的终曲。但是这种尝试没有结果。他考虑再三还是把乐器演奏放到了第一百三十二号作品之中，放到了那个四重奏之中。森雷特纳和切尔尼肯定地说，在演出（1824年5月）过后，贝多芬都没放弃这一想法。
从贝多芬稿本上看出，这种技术难度是难以驾驭的。贝多芬的这一计划在实行时有很大难度，因为这需要在一部交响曲中引入合唱。为了在作品其他段落引进合唱，贝多芬做了很多尝试，甚至想以别的方法来替代。在柔板的第二旋律稿本上，他写道：“也许合唱加在这里会很合适。”但是他下不了狠心同他忠实的乐队分手。他说：“当我突生一个念头时，我就听见一种乐器在弹奏它，而从未听见人的歌声。”因此，他总是尽量延后使用声部，甚至不仅把终曲吟诵而且把欢乐主题全都交给器乐来演奏。
为解决这个难题，贝多芬必须更深一步地去了解延后和犹豫，其中的原委更加深刻。但是，尽管这个任务很难，贝多芬却还是倾尽心力去思考解决方法。

直到生命最后时刻他才如愿以偿地解决问题。那是怎样的一个场景啊！当欢乐主题第一次出现，乐队突然中止。突然间，寂静一片，寂静氛围带来了一种神秘，这使得歌唱气氛也变得神圣。的确应该如此：神圣就是这部乐曲的主题。它用轻柔的气息抚慰痛苦，欢乐悄悄渗入心灵，开始时十分温柔，就像贝多芬的那个朋友说的一样，“因看到他那温柔的双眼而想流泪”。欢乐从天而降，包裹在超自然的平静中。当主题随后进入声部时，首先表现的是低音部，整个音乐情调带着一种严肃和压抑。

当时维也纳完全被罗西尼和意大利歌剧一统天下。伟大的作品终于震撼了平庸的听众。在那一刻，连维也纳的轻浮也受到震撼。贝多芬想去伦敦定居，并想在那儿演出《第九交响曲》。这一次的情形仍像1809年那样，贝多芬几位高贵的朋友再一次恳求他，请他无论如何不要离开祖国。
这些朋友劝贝多芬说：“我们知道您写了一部新的圣乐曲，您在其中表达了您深刻的信念所启迪您的那些情感。渗透着您那伟大心灵的超自然之光。另外，我们也了解到，您在原来创作的伟大交响曲基础上，又新作了一部伟大乐曲……您最近几年隐遁生活，使所有曾经关注你的人怅然若失。大家都痛苦地思考，为什么当一种外国音乐在设法侵占我们舞台时，当外国人试图把德国本土艺术作品逼得无人问津时，您这位德国人心中地位崇高的天才人物却沉默不语？德意志期待的一种新生命和荣光，期待有人能够不拘泥于当今形势而创造出一种真与美的时代，我们都认为，这一重任只有您方能承担……但愿您能让我们遂了心愿……但愿仰仗您的天才，未来的春天对于我们，对于世界，将会加倍地鲜花盛放！”这些言辞恳切的信说明贝多芬在德国的精英们中间不但在艺术方面，而且是在道德方面享有多大的威望。他的崇拜者们为颂扬他的才华而想到的第一个词儿，既不是学术，也不是艺术，而是信念这两个字。
