温森特·威廉·梵高一出世，就落到困难的境地。他生于一八五三年三月三十日，而就在一年前的这一天，母亲生了一个夭折的孩子，名字也叫温森特·威廉·梵高。前一个温森特的坟墓距村子教堂仅仅几步远。这个号称大津德尔特的小村庄，有百十来位居民，而温森特的父亲正是主持村子教堂的牧师。因此，小温森特刚一识字，就能看到他的名字，就仿佛刻在他自己的墓碑上。他可能终生是个替身。按照心理学家和精神病理学家的观点，这种局面给活下来的孩子，制造了对死去孩子的巨大负罪感，只因他的出生造成前者死亡，这种感觉，他的生存本身，注定要占据他的个性中心。后生的孩子要为自己的生存辩解，就必须让自我无限膨胀，创造出奇迹来，或者满足于碌碌无为，如果没有生存能力便从世上消失。再说了，与他同名同姓的这个死者，究竟是谁呢？同一个兄弟或者一个姐妹竞争，已经够难的了，再同一个死者，一个陌生人竞争，又何其难啊！对那个陌生人，就可以做出各种设想，在想象中，那人前途不可限量，能有多少惊人的成就？怎么办方可不枉此生呢？梵高活在世上，简直就过着还债的一生。许久之后，另一位大画家，萨尔瓦多·达利，也必须面对同样的状况：在他之前，另一个早夭的萨尔瓦多·达利，曾备受他父母的宠爱。这位画家本可以做出另一种反应，干脆优哉游哉，游戏人生，干什么都屡试屡败，又总是从头再来。好几种理由倾向于削弱这种诠释。首先，在十九世纪中叶，幼稚的道德观念还很顽固，梵高的处境是常见的现象，按照传统习惯：小孩死了再生的孩子，就起同一名字。这种做法有其文化根源，从而消除其可能呈现在我们眼中这种怪异的，甚至是可怕的特点。其次，应该了解在梵高的家族中，温森特的祖父就叫温森特·威廉·梵高，而他父亲的一个兄弟，富有的艺术品商人，也叫温森特·威廉。梵高！而且，再往上辈儿推，还有两个叫温森特的家族成员，我们这位画家肯定了解：须知这个家族从几个世纪以来记了族谱，出了好几位牧师。画家的另外几位叔伯，起的第二个名字，不是温森特，就是威廉……这就冲淡了同名坟墓的影响，但又没有完全消除其震撼。由于这位富有的伯父温森特·威廉没有孩子，给我们的温森特(以及他那生下便死去的哥哥)起这样的名字，当然是为了向他表示敬意，以求得他的荫护，而温森特在一定程度上也得到了。最后，还应当回到弗洛伊德谈到列奥纳多·达·芬奇时，有限定性的言论：另一个人，如果处于跟列奥纳多同样的心理状态，那一定要成为他的反面。在哥哥死后出生并起同样名字的孩子，远不是人人都能成为梵高和达利。仍然秘不可解，弗洛伊德认为应求助于个人的天生基质，才可能弄清这种现象。不过，依我们看，这个谜团是解不开的，因为，一种个性的形成因果关系极其复杂，几乎是无穷尽的大小力量全方位起作用的结果，“而且每种力量都有效果”，根本不可能说清主体在其成长的每个阶段会做什么。他的行为同星体的运行一样“混乱”。星体一旦超越可计算的预见空间，就再也无法确定了，因此，不可确定性就成为主体生存的本质。换言之：梵高有这个自由，可以是也可以不是他已成的样子。一个与他同名的已逝哥哥坟墓的存在，是在他生活中起作用的力量之一，而诸多力量大部分我们都不得而知。在荷兰乡间烈日下散步时，一次中暑可能与同名哥哥的坟墓具有同样决定性的作用。这种情况，任何面临艺术创作的人都有体验。因为，梵高的作品并不总是那么忧伤或凄惨，有时还能显示生存的一种无可比拟的幸福。因此，一部传记就必须以谦抑之态，在鲜为人知，但又非神话的背景上，设立几处路标，即使达不到绝非可能的艺术家的透明，至少也为了热爱他，更深度地欣赏他的画作，同时尊重他的自由，或者说，尊重安德烈·布勒东所说寓于我们每人身上的这种“砸不开的黑夜内核”。……
