但不管怎么说，老霍华德·休斯都是一个积极进取的人，他始终有着明确的目标，那就是赚钱，并且他也一直在朝着这个目标努力前进着。在小时候他就学会了跟小孩子们斗鸡，以赚取他们的钱，长大之后这一特性更是被他发挥到了极致，只要哪里有赚钱的机会，他就会往哪里钻。
老霍华德·休斯在年轻的时候曾做过很多工作，包括报务员、新闻记者、律师以及采矿工等等，在1901年的时候，他听说休斯敦发现了蕴藏极为丰富的石油资源，就立即举家迁了过去，想在那里开采石油以发家致富。
事实上在这之前他还开采过银、开采过铅、开采过锌，不过这些都没有使他富裕起来，开采石油最后也是如此。
后来老霍华德·休斯另出机杼，转而把目光投向研制新型的钻油工具上面。当时美国至少有十几位科学家正在研究这东西，他们都没有成功，但是老霍华德·休斯成功了。凭着他发明的钻头，老霍华德·休斯创立了休斯工具公司。
1979年2月3日，邓小平参观了休斯工具公司，我们可以看到他参观工具公司时拍下的珍贵照片，照片把休斯工具公司的钻头也拍了进去。
从照片上看，那钻头仿佛是中世纪将军们戴的头盔，雄赳赳气昂昂。有介绍显示，它安装有特殊的空气压缩式旋转锥，尖端有166个刀口。
