艰辛的童年
路德维希·范·贝多芬，生于1770年12月16日，原籍是弗朗德勒，而贝多芬却是在科隆附近一间简陋的小阁楼中出生的。贝多芬的父亲是一名无所作为的男高音歌手，还是一个酒鬼。他的母亲是一个女佣，她的前夫是某官宦人家的一个侍从，前夫死后，她便改嫁给了贝多芬的父亲。
贝多芬的童年十分不幸。他自出生后，就不断接受生活给他的考验，似乎随时都要奔赴悲壮的战场。他那唱男高音的父亲一门心思要挖掘他的音乐天赋：从4岁开始，贝多芬每天都会被关在房间里练习小提琴和羽管键琴，一练就是几个小时。童年的自由自在被繁重的音乐练习取代，这压得贝多芬喘不过气来，他甚至开始厌恶音乐了。到最后，他的父亲只能通过暴力来逼迫自己的儿子就范。
贝多芬的父亲完全不管家中事务，而只顾酗酒，所以贝多芬从少年时代便开始担起养家糊口的重担。他11岁加入剧院乐队，13岁成为一名管风琴乐手。1787年，贝多芬的母亲因感染肺病而死，这使贝多芬变得心有疑虑，以为自己也得了肺病，经常感到不舒服。然而更令他难过的是他患了忧郁症。那时候他只有17岁，他的两个弟弟都还很小，他只能担起家长的责任。他不得不羞愧地恳求剧院让他那酒鬼父亲退休。剧院不但同意了，还因为担心他的父亲会将退休金挥霍一空，而将退休金交给了贝多芬。贝多芬的青少年就是如此心酸度过的，这些伤心往事一直深深烙在他的内心深处。
当然，贝多芬的生活也并不是一味灰暗的。在波恩，贝多芬与勃朗宁一家建立了深厚的友情。勃朗宁家有个女儿叫埃莱奥诺尔，贝多芬只比她大两岁，他们成了朋友，贝多芬会在闲暇时教她音乐和诗歌。埃莱奥诺尔长大后与医生韦格勒结了婚，后来韦格勒也成了贝多芬的挚友。如果说贝多芬的童年是愁云惨淡的，那勃朗宁一家便是照进他灰暗生命的一缕温暖阳光，支撑着他的精神世界和生活。
贝多芬人生的头二十年都是在波恩度过的，他少年时代的梦想就诞生于这个地方。白雾笼罩下的白杨，在水流中默默不语的矮灌木和各色果树，星罗棋布的村落、教堂以及墓地……他将这些牢牢刻印在心间，直到生命结束之时，他还想着回到这里，只是未能如愿。
我美丽的故乡，我出生的地方，它是那么美，又那么明亮，跟我离开时一样。
耳聋带来的痛苦
1789年，席卷欧洲的革命爆发了，波恩也受到战火波及，贝多芬于是离开家乡，来到音乐之都维也纳，并定居于此。在从波恩到维也纳的途中，贝多芬遇到了奔赴前线与法军作战的黑森州部队，这使他产生了灵感，创作了《出征歌》以及爱国歌曲《我们是伟大的德意志民族》。从1798年开始，贝多芬与法国人的接触多了起来，他的思想越来越倾向共和。
在此期间，施泰因豪森创作了一幅贝多芬的肖像画。从这幅肖像画中，我们可以看到贝多芬当时的风采，修长挺拔，略显消瘦，但很年轻。1796年，贝多芬在记事本上留下这样的话：“勇敢一点儿！即使身体孱弱，我也要展现我的全部才华……25岁了！我如今已经25岁了！是时候该大显身手了。”德·伯恩哈德夫人和格林克都曾给过贝多芬如是评语：举止无礼，高傲自满，口音重，不讨人喜欢。事实上，在贝多芬高傲的外表下，隐藏着一颗善良的心。不管哪个朋友出现经济困难，他一定全力帮助，直到对方走出困境。
1796年到1800年，贝多芬开始受耳聋症折磨，他的耳朵一直嗡嗡作响，这样的耳鸣一直折磨着他，他的内脏也时常疼痛。但是，倔强的他一直暗自强忍病痛，没有跟任何人提起，就连其身边的亲人和朋友也不知晓。直到1801年，他实在是无法忍受了，终于把秘密告诉了韦格勒医生和阿曼达牧师两位好友。而此时，他已经到了绝望边缘。
