《致命的百合花：切利尼自传》中译本是根据英国企鹅丛书1970年的英译本与美国现代丛书的英译本译成。
这是一个小的长方形盒子，要模仿罗东达圆形神庙门前的斑岩石棺的样子加工。我做时除了模仿外，还加上一些我自己设计的可爱的小面具。我的师傅把它拿给大家去看，夸耀这是他的作坊做出来的最好的作品。
为了使我的光荣的公爵与永生的上帝高兴，我把铜像进行最后的加工。在一个升天节的早晨，我把铜像的遮布彻底揭掉。太阳还没有完全升上天，可是铜像周围已经挤满了数不清的人群。他们异口同声地夸它，人人竞相称颂。

本威努托·切利尼（Benvenuto Cellini，1500-1571）是意大利雕塑家、金银工艺师、作家。他是文艺复兴时期艺术中的风格主义的代表人物。切利尼最著名的金银工艺品是为法国国王法兰西一世制作的盐罐（1539-1543）与珀耳修斯雕像（1545-1554），而他写的回忆录也闻名世界。他的作家的称呼主要因《致命的百合花:切利尼自传》而得。

不论是什么样的人，只要他们做过出类拔萃的事，或者取得看来确实是伟大的成就，要是他们是诚实的人，那么他们就应该亲手写出自己生平的经历，但是，他们不应在40岁前就想干这种如此美好的事。我现在已是一个年过58岁的人了，我在我的家乡佛罗伦萨，心中自然地产生想写自传的念头。我同其他人一样，经常要与命运进行艰苦的斗争，但是，现在是我一生中最顺利的时候。我相信，我现在的心情比过去任何时候都宁静，身体比过去任何时候都健康。我记得一些曾在我的生活中发生过的令人高兴的事，也有难以形容的恐怖的事。当我回想起这些事的时候，发现我已经是一个58岁的人，而且由于天助，我却是老当益壮。
那些努力工作，并显示出一点天才的人，对世界都是大有好处的。这是千真万确的事。他们表明他们是一些能干的人，杰出的人，也许光凭这一点就足以令人感到满意了。凡人所为，不应同别人相差太远，因此我在写自传时，也经常自我吹嘘。自夸的方式是有多种多样的，而主要的一种，是让人知道，自己是出自世代名门的贵族后裔。

这个中译本，是根据英国企鹅丛书的英译本与美国现代丛书（无出版年代）的英译本翻译的。前书的英译者是乔治·布尔，后书的英译者是约翰·爱丁顿·西蒙治。中译本序采用前书，后记采用后书。企鹅丛书的第1版是1956年出书的。后在1961、1964、1966、1969、1970年再版了5次。这个中译本主要是根据1970年的版本译的，有的句子是根据或参考西蒙治的译本译的；而书中的注解，则基本采用了西蒙治的译本中的注解，其中有一些是中译者加的。
这个回忆录或自传，叙述了切利尼从小到1562年即62年经历中的精彩事件。西蒙治的后记介绍了切利尼1562年以后的一些情况，是对他自传的补充材料。
切利尼的一生多灾多难，其经历曲折离奇。当我们阅读这本书的时候，我们不仅是在听他讲述自己惊险的阅历，而且可以对文艺复兴时期意大利的生活状况，尤其是那些统治阶级的头目：教皇、公爵、红衣主教等的内幕及自传著述年代中的历史事件有所了解，因为切利尼对这些事，有的是耳闻目睹，有的则是亲自参与。
法国19世纪伟大的作曲家柏辽兹读了这本自传以后创作了以《本威努托·切利尼》为标题的歌剧。
切利尼的这本书将为我们了解文艺复兴时代，了解当时艺术界，提供生动的感性知识。读者读这本书的目的是为了了解历史，而不是去学习切利尼的一些作为。
由于切利尼在书中提到他为教皇与法国国王法兰西斯一世工作时吃尽了苦头，他恨死他们了。教皇与法兰西斯一世皇族的盾徽都以百合花为标志，所以我认为把这本回忆录取名为《致命的百合花：切利尼自传》是能够表达这本书的基本精神的。
