《程曾厚讲雨果》主要以20世纪后半期新的视角，介绍法国作家维克多·雨果跌宕起伏的一生和他多方面的文学创作成就。我们既考虑国内对雨果已有的认识，也关注半个世纪以来国外雨果研究新的发展及成果。因为我们目前对雨果的认识仍然有限，所以我们立足于雨果本人的著作和思想，介绍重于研究，文本多于评论。这是我们为初学者准备的入门书，也希望对研究外国文学的专业工作者能有所帮助。我们更希望从《程曾厚讲雨果》里走出来的雨果形象是一个有所更新的形象。

Author Description

程曾厚（1937—）江苏无锡人，1961年北京大学法语语言文学专业毕业，1965年北康大学法国文学专业研究生毕业；曾任南京大学法语教研室主任、博士生导师、中山大学外国语学院教授，2003年退休；中国作家协会会员，法国“法国文学史学会”通讯会员，法国“雨果之友学会”会员；曾获法国教育部颁发的“棕榈叶教育骑士勋章”。主要著译有《雨果诗选》（外国文学名著）、《雨果传》（莫洛亚著，合译）、《雨果评论汇编》（编选）、《圣母院的钟声》、《雨果诗选》（“世界文库”）、《法国诗选》、《雨果诗选》（两卷本）、《雨果散文》、《雨果绘画》、《雨果传》（巴雷尔著）以及游记散文《圣母院的钟声》、《在法国——雨果的邀请》等。

作家雨果还有精力和灵感创作和沉思吗?诗人雨果已经把《诗人的职责》遗忘干净了吗?我们以后才知道，这只是表面的沉寂。不论顺境或逆境，雨果晚上都没有放下自己的笔。他每年都写悼念女儿的诗篇，以后收入《静观集》，成为《静观集》里最为人称道的抒情诗。他开始试写史诗故事，成为以后《历代传说集》的篇章。1845年11月，新任命的法兰西世卿进入贵族院仅仅半年，在闹得沸沸扬扬的捉奸事件后仅仅四个月，这个忙于应酬的社会名流居然能坐下来，偷偷地在写一部当时名为《贫困》的小说，这就是17年后出版并轰动世界的《悲惨世界》。也是在40年代，作家雨果有时躲在阁楼上拿起画笔，在纸上挥洒形象，以另一种方式表达自己。雨果不是容易被压垮、被打倒的作家，雨果的灵魂深处仍然是诗人。
1848年，席卷欧洲的革命风暴从法国刮起。“二月革命”猛然来临，推翻了路易一菲利浦的金融王朝。雨果的习惯，走上街头，来到协和广场。他对重大事件，只相信自己的眼睛。24日，有人告诉他，议会解散，国王退位，由奥尔良公爵夫人摄政。雨果正中下怀，奥尔良公爵夫人不是他的诗歌崇拜者吗?他认为成立共和国的时机没有成熟。第二天，雨果跑去巴士底广场，巴士底广场是巴黎群众集会的广场。任何人到这儿来是要有点勇气的。雨果宣布路易一菲利浦的儿媳奥尔良公爵夫人摄政，但他的宣讲不受群众欢迎。他援用英国维多利亚女王的例子，更是受到嘘叫。这恐怕是雨果作为政治家，做得最不合时宜的事情。相反，诗人拉马丁顺应时代的潮流，宣布赞成共和国。

德国哲学家雅斯贝尔斯（1883一1969）曾经提出“轴心时代”的观念。他认为，在公元前500年前后，在希腊、印度、中国和以色列等地几乎同时出现了伟大的思想家，他们都对人类关切的根本问题提出了独到的看法。希腊有苏格拉底、柏拉图，印度有释迦牟尼，中国有老子、孔子，以色列有犹太教的先知们，形成了不同的文化传统。这些文化传统经过两千多年的发展已经成为人类文化的主要精神财富。“人类一直靠轴心时代所产生的思考和创造的一切而生存，每一次新的飞跃都回顾这一时期，并被它重新燃起火焰。”①例如，欧洲的文艺复兴就是把目光投向其文化的源头古希腊，使欧洲的文明重新燃起新的光辉，而对世界产生重大影响。中国的宋明理学（新儒学）在经受印度佛教的冲击后，再次回归孔孟，而把中国哲学提高到一个新的水平。各个民族、各个国家的思想家们就是这样代代相传地推动着人类历史文化的发展。
