彼得·阿内特（Peter Arnett）先生年逾七旬，是一位长期跟踪越南战争、海湾战争以及阿富汁战争的世界著名的战地记者。曾独家采访过萨达姆·侯赛因和本·拉登，是西方媒体中第一个采访到本·拉登的记者。同时还采访过大量国际政坛上风云人物，如阿拉法特、贝·布托、卡斯特罗等等。
1966年因越战的卓越报道而获得了世界新闻业的最高奖项——普利策奖，是全美公认的越战中最出色的战地记者。
1991年，第一次海湾战争，阿内特在人类历史上第一次通过电视进行现场直播，成为电视新闻转播史上的里程碑。这使他赢得当年的美国电视最高荣誉——艾美奖
1994年，他出版了一小书《从战场上归来》。这本书被《纽约时报》书评版评为当年年度图书。
彼得·阿内特至今一共获得了57项主要的新闻奖。在美国、巴西等国大学获得荣誉士学位。2006年，他还被英女王任命为新西兰官员。他目前是美国和新紫蓝的双重公民。
彼得·阿内特于2007年3月1日出任汕头大学长江新闻与传播学院访问教授，在汕头执教一个学期。他就自己多年的战争报道经历和媒体从业心得，开展了系列讲座和课程。目前，他已和汕头人学续约三年，成为正式教授。本书是他讲授的他本人传奇的报道生涟。数十幅独家战地历史照片首次披露。

从战地到中国
我受聘来汕头大学教书，坦白地说，我处于热切的学习状态。长江新闻与传播学院院长陈婉莹邀请我来执教，我意识到了面对的挑战。
我猜想，由于我一生很多时间身处危机状态中的遥远国度，因此当我来陌生的地方，就像这次来到中国，我作最坏的打算。
这时你或许可以责难西方媒体报道只强调中国的政治，或仅仅报道这个泱泱大国的增长速度和变化。但我当时确实很吃惊。
从现代化的建筑、水库、公园到生活设施，汕头大学毋庸置疑是一件艺术品。汕大学牛整体以及我接触到的汕头大学新闻学院的学生，其高水平的专业技能以及他们对自己在国家未来担当的角色所显示的激情给我留下深刻印象。
我在这里最早遇到的年轻人之一，是学院安排来为我安顿住处的。他诚恳地对我说：“我真想与您重回巴格达作战地报道。”这是奉献精神，亦是学生对自己将来的领悟。无论在这所大学附近的团体或远离大学的汕头市区，中国人的谦恭有礼和进取心都让我感动。
我不会如一个没到过中国的人一般站在这儿向大家讲演。我第一次到中国是1972年，在北京停留了3天。河内的北越政府交给我们3个美国飞行员，算是战俘。我们要带他们回国。从河内，经北京和莫斯科回美国。我被禁止在北京城任何地方拍照，当时还是“文化大革命”时期。
1979年我第二次来中国，那时我竭尽全力跟随当时的联合国秘书长库尔特?瓦尔德海姆而来。瓦尔德海姆按照惯例会晤中国当时的最高领导人、改革家邓小平，我当时跟随拍摄了大量照片。那时的中国不与西方国家往来，几乎没有外国访客。
当然，我肯定不会放过顺便游览北京著名景区的好时机。从历史层面来说，我探寻北京古迹其实也不是太久前的事，因为我此后来过北京几次。……
