全心全意不离不弃乃谋士之本
在高科技公司工作多年，半途而废和无疾而终是时有发生的事情，而作为一个探索者，接受是必须的。
在这个过程中深深地感受到，我们现在已经使用的微软产品方便、快捷而又智能，但是在科技研发过程中充满了曲折和困难……期间甚至经历过一次完全的推翻重写，这个过程，让微软视窗团队的每一个工程师都曾经充满沮丧和煎熬。也许，无论是历史还是科技，这种曲折都是前进的一个组成部分。
1998年在微软正经历由美国司法部指控的“反垄断案”，在这场与全民抗争的诉讼中，盖茨对公司的运营管理有了一种前所未有的身心疲惫之感。1999年开始，盖茨把大批股份分给了员工，之后又把微软的帅印交给了鲍尔默，自己退居幕后任首席架构师。
从瞩目的舞台中央退出，盖茨有了更多的思考微软的战略和方向。1999年夏天，因特网视窗操作系统的概念开始在盖茨的备忘录中日益清晰，一个被命名为“.NET”的新战略呼之欲出。其中一个更为大胆甚至可称之为划时代的构思——用人机对话的音控系统取代鼠标点击的操作系统。按照惯例，在这个构思真正出台前，盖茨需要一个“军师”，他衷情的是对产品方向和具体技术熟稔的行家，可以与自己共同探讨技术操作层面的问题，从而确定战略的方向。而在当时的微软总部并没有合适的人选。
1999年夏天，大洋彼岸的微软中国研究院正热火朝天，所有人员都在齐心备战10月微软中国研究院第一次“向比尔汇报”。仅仅一年的时间，就提前获得了汇报的机会，这对李开复和他的团队来说，已经是莫大的荣耀。1999年10月18日，李开复和五位同事走进了盖茨的办公室。李开复与比尔·盖茨的第一次亲密接触获得意想不到的惊喜：原本一个小时的汇报，盖茨主动要求延长了整整45分钟；展示研究成果时，盖茨对李开复团队寄予厚望，“以后在图像技术和其他多媒体技术方面，可要靠你们了”；事后盖茨多次不无骄傲地表示：“我打赌你们都不知道，我们有一批世界最厉害的多媒体科学家，他们都在微软中国研究院。”
正是这次汇报，李开复这个名字开始走进了盖茨的“心”。因此，在第二年夏天，在盖茨亟需语言识别专家来为自己一年就开始的人机对话系统为核心的超级浏览器出谋划策时，盖茨想到了“李开复”。2000年7月，李开复回到了微软总部，走进了盖茨的智囊团。
据李开复回忆：“这段时间，我几乎每一两个星期都见盖茨一次，和他沟通我的看法……这段时间是很美妙而且值得回忆的。能和盖茨一起设计互联网未来的蓝图是非常激动人心的。这个时候，他常提到我回到总部他有多开心。”李开复与盖茨的“君臣”关系变得越来越特殊和亲密。
但是在“.NET”这样一个宏伟而庞大的工程面前，微软内部的反对声异常强大，其中为首的是微软智囊团的元老人物、盖茨的爱将、Windows的执掌人吉姆·阿尔钦。这是因为这个反对派的资深与强硬，最终盖茨迫于压力放弃了“.NET”计划。而面对“.NET”的流产，心中最为伤痛的还有一个人——“.NET”的同谋者李开复。
