《水流云在：英若诚自传》是英若诚的自传。

英若诚（1929—2003），满族人，出生于一个天主教家庭。他的祖父叫英敛之，是《大公报》和辅仁大学的创办者。他的父亲叫英千里，是辅仁大学的教务长，在北京沦陷时期因为从事抗日活动，两次被捕入狱。他的儿子叫英达，是著名的演员、导演。

他自己上学时先后被三所学校开除，在清华大学毕业后进入北京人民艺术剧院。作为翻译家和演员，他把美国最杰出的戏剧大师之一阿瑟·米勒的代表作《推销员之死》翻译成中文，并和米勒合作，将其搬上北京人艺舞台，在剧中成功塑造了主角威利·罗曼；他还把老舍的《茶馆》翻译成英文在国外出版，在话剧《茶馆》《雷雨》《龙须沟》中扮演重要角色。

文革中，他被捕入狱。在监狱里他做书、给别人画像、做泥瓦匠，为了生存，他学会了种葡萄、孵小鸡、做酱菜，甚至是发电和做鸦片。出狱后他在电影《末代皇帝》《马可·波罗》中扮演了重要角色，做了文化部副部长。

Author Description

英若诚（1929—2003），著名话剧表演艺术家、导演、翻译家、政治家，曾任中华人民共和国文化部副部长、北京人民艺术剧院的建院成员。他在话剧《龙须沟》《雷雨》《茶馆》中扮演过重要角色，1979年把老舍的《茶馆》翻译成英文在国外出版，1983年他又将美国当代著名作家阿瑟·米勒的代表作《推销员之死》译成中文，并与米勒合作将其搬上北京人艺舞台，同时在剧中成功塑造了主角威利·罗曼。他参加演出并导演了30多部话剧、10余部电影和电视剧，同时还翻译了200多万字的作品，其中包括莎士比亚的著作。英若诚被誉为“全世界最杰出的十名中国艺术家之一”，在舞台、银幕和文化外交上做出过重要的贡献。

康开丽（Claire Conceison），美国戏剧学教授。她于2000年从康奈尔大学获得博士学位。著有《重要的另一位：在中国舞台上演美国人》（夏威夷大学出版社，2004年），并在表演和亚洲研究方面的刊物上发表多篇文章。自1990年起她在北京和上海戏剧界研究中国当代戏剧，翻译了多个当代中国剧本；同时也是一位多产的导演。

译者简介：

张放，浙江余姚人。毕业于上海海事大学，获英国语言文学专业学士，翻译理论与实践专业硕士。曾在上海戏剧学院外事办公室担任翻译。现居加拿大。

为自己父亲的自传写序是一件不同寻常的事。

读这本自传更是一件不同寻常的事。那已经永远离开了我的父亲又回来了。他仿佛又活了过来，用我再熟悉不过的口吻，把他的故事娓娓道来。而这些故事，有多少是我亲身经历、亲眼目睹的！这和读别人的传记可不太一样了。那些细节，那种感受，多少次将已经长大成人、自认为已经彻底遗忘那些经历的我，瞬间拉回到当年的情景，同时从父亲一侧，我再次观察同一事件的另一面，甚至审视他老人家观点迥异的内心。还有许多事，我虽不在现场，但伴父久了，一辈子茶余饭后，不知听他讲了多少次。故事中的人物，从谆谆长者马相伯，到天桥混混四爷爷，从清末权贵庆亲王，到冀县狱吏“卢部长”，各色人等，上天入地，都是我从未谋面的老熟人。老来父亲病得糊涂，这些往事却越发记得清楚，我常伸出五指，告诉他这故事我已经听过多少遍了。

从小到大，我对“爸爸”这一重要历史人物经历了如下心路历程：他先是无比高大，无所不能，骑马定车，演戏绘画，泥瓦木工，抽烟喝酒，总之没他拿不起来的。这样一个爸比哪个同学的都拿得出手。后来他就失踪了，也不知是干了特务还是反革命，反正让人民政府给抓起来了。当他的儿子就自认倒霉吧，是个人有个爸就比我强。老师、亲戚都教育我，必须跟你爸划清界限！我自己也早早立下革命志：就算他哪天出来了，我也不认他！等他真被放出来的时候，我又改变了主意：还是以帮助教育他为主，万一他能改造好呢？后来他还真越改越好，演戏出名，译著出版，最后还当上部长，老出国！这爸爸可真是了不起啊，电影、话剧拿过来就演不说，还张嘴就练英语！试想见到个刚练好普通话的小歌星都尖叫的年轻人，有这样的爸意味着什么？崇拜！粉丝！很多年我就是我爸的粉丝。可时间长了就不行了，总感觉生活在他老人家的阴影下，好好的学名没人叫，常年被人称为谁谁他儿子，烦不烦哪？况且我慢慢发现这老头儿也不是什么都行，不光拼力气比速度不是我的个儿，在很多新鲜事物、新观念上简直就是迟钝落伍嘛！再往后自己真的成长起来了，也出名了，出的也不比他老人家名头小，很多过去爸爸教我的反过来我得把着他了，担心他露怯出丑，老得帮他罩着。最后他病倒了，坍缩成一个病床上的瘦老头儿，一个无能为力的老小孩儿，我感慨地想：老爷子这一辈子忙什么了？既没有积蓄下丰厚的物质财产，也没有积累下丰富的精神财富，不能说碌碌无为，但起码也是全给别人干了。

人说每天生活在身边，再伟大的传奇人物也会显得平庸。我不知道父亲是否算得一个伟大人物，但他这一生有着太多传奇。他曾用这些传奇不断提醒我他绝不平庸。人都离开这个世界五年了，他用这本自传又一次做到了这一点。在读这本书的过程中，我又一次惊奇地发现了我的父亲，他的聪明，他的锋利，他的博学，他的幽默……敢情我到今天还没有超越他！还被远远甩在后面！很可能永远追不上了！我发现这么多年来我其实一直沿用着他的思维方式、他的哲学逻辑。我认为独属于自己的人生价值观念、自我剖析能力、幽默处世态度甚至憎恶喜好诸癖，都能在这本书里找到出处。我不仅仅是我自己，我原来是一群人集合中的一分子和延续。我身上的许多特点其实都不是我的发明创造，而是和这一群人共有的。这一群人另一个共有的东西就是他们的家族姓氏——英。他们之中的优秀代表有英敛之、英千里和英若诚等人，他们幸运或不幸地把家族的命运和近代中国的命运结合在了一起，各自在属于自己的时代和舞台上演出了自己的华彩段落。现在火炬传到我的手里了，我不仅有责任把它高高举起，还有义务将它朝下一代传下去。
