Book Abstract

《杨慎传》：
其实，正直大臣们的这一美好而善良的愿望，未免有点儿太天真了，按时下的说法叫作这些人政治上不成熟。
“议大礼”风波已经平息，被打死的官员已经人土为安，发配最偏远的杨慎也早已到达云南永昌的军营里服着役，嘉靖皇帝的怒气也该消得差不多了。在这样的情形之下，嘉靖四年（1525年）的五月份，以江西巡按陈洪谟为首的数名官员、大臣，认为时机已经成熟，就联名给嘉靖皇帝上了一份奏折，十分委婉地陈述了赦免杨慎及其他参与议大礼被惩处的诸位大臣和官员。嘉靖帝看到这道折子后，心头的怒火重新燃起，但又不好发作，只是采取不理睬的态度，将奏折压下。
嘉靖皇帝认为将奏折压下不理不睬就万事大吉了，反正时下的大明朝廷是自己说了算。可是，朝廷里有良知的大臣有的是，让他想不到的是一波未平另一波又起。三个月后的八月份，刑部尚书林俊又给嘉靖帝上疏了一道厚厚的奏折，其主题还是请求重新起用参与议大礼被免职、发配的诸位大臣及官员，让他们官复原职，回到朝廷来做事，为大明王朝尽忠效劳。在这份奏折里，林俊还陈述了大明王朝实行廷杖的本意与渊源，具体讲到了成化初年朝廷开始施用廷杖时，其目的不是要将大臣打死打伤，而只是对有过失的大臣一种羞辱，行廷杖之刑时都是用厚厚的棉垫之类放在被打者的屁股上，再用木棒捶打棉垫子而已，让被打者感到耻辱，从中受到警示而改过自新。从此以后，廷杖之刑就这样延续使用下来，已经六十多年的时间都是如此行刑。可是，从本朝开始，特别是刘瑾等人执掌廷杖之刑以来，就改为将被廷杖者解开衣裤，直接将木棒打到光屁股上，这是施暴而不是廷杖，已经完全失去了它的本来意义。更为恶劣的是，在这次议大礼的廷杖时当场就打死那么多人，造成这么严重的后果完全是刘瑾一伙的责任，但皇上也有失察之责呢！同时，他还在奏折里向皇上坦诚地提出了今后行廷杖之刑的具体做法。
嘉靖皇帝耐着性子仔细看完了林俊的这份奏折，觉得这位林尚书幼稚得很可爱，他根本不了解自己议大礼的真实用意。最后，嘉靖皇帝便一笑了之，将奏折搁在一边，不理不睬即可，天不会塌下来。
时间一天天过去，转眼已是两个月的光阴，朝廷里的大臣们也没有人再提“议大礼”这档子旧事。可是，十月中旬，朝廷再次收到了一份上疏，是远在昆明的云南巡抚郭楠寄来的，所书的中心议题就是要求朝廷立即赦免“永远充军永昌”的杨慎，而且言辞比较激烈。
在郭楠看来，“议大礼”不是什么大不了的事，参与的大臣们也是为了大明的朝纲祖制，对江山社稷没有造成任何危害，皇上何必发那么大的怒，把那么多的大臣处死的处死、发配的发配。特别是身为翰林院修撰的杨慎，是一位难寻的旷世奇才，应该为朝廷效力才对，却被发配到瘴疠之地的云南永昌府去，连省城昆明都没有资格立足，沦落到妻离子别、有家难回的地步。郭楠对杨慎父子十分了解，杨廷和为首辅时，郭楠就经常聆听他的教诲，对他们父子两人的做人为官之道特别敬佩。郭楠自从年初在昆明见到拖着病体到云南来的杨慎，心中就对这位昔日的状元郎产生了难以忍受的恻隐之心，发誓一定要想办法将他救出。
