Author Description

李长之（1910—1978），山东利津人。20世纪30年代“清华四剑客”之一，与季羡林、吴组缃、林庚齐名，中国20世纪最伟大的批评家。

一关于了解陶渊明的政治
态度的一点线索
陶渊明的性格和政治态度，是和他的两位著名的先辈有密切关系的。这倒并不是仅仅由于生理学的或遗传学的看法，如果那样，便未免是机械唯物论了。问题是，陶渊明对于这两位先辈，的确有着异乎寻常的崇拜，因为崇拜，就容易受着影响。在事实上，陶渊明的风度、爱好、习惯，我们也都可以在他那两位先辈的传记里找到鲜明的影子。那么，关于陶渊明的政治态度，也就在他这两位先辈的政治态度中可能得到一点线索了，虽然这不是唯一的线索。
二〓被人轻视的善战的溪族
陶侃是不是陶渊明的曾祖，曾经有过争执。阎若璩、阎咏父子和洪亮吉都是主张陶渊明并非陶侃的直系后代的，何焯、钱大昕以及大部分研究陶渊明的专家则肯定是的。
这事情确有可疑。因为，虽然沈约的《宋书》上载明“曾祖侃”，但和陶渊明的同时代诗人并且又是陶渊明的好朋友的颜延之作的《诔》却只有“韬此洪族”四个字，并没有提到他的曾祖是谁；更奇怪的是陶渊明自己的《命子》诗，提到陶侃时，只是说，“在我中晋，业融长沙，桓桓长沙，伊勋伊德”，竟缺少明确的交代，而《赠长沙公》一诗，序文“长沙公于余为族祖同出大司马”，在族祖之间的句逗又有两个读法，再加上下文更淡淡地说出“昭穆既远，已为路人”的话，这就更增加了读者的迷惑。所以朱自清所写《陶渊明年谱中之问题》①一文，索性说：“至世系年岁，则只可姑存然疑而已。”朱自清的文章是带有总结性的，这就是说，这个问题就现有的史料论，已证明是不可能得出更明确的答案了。
因此，我们对这问题可以不必纠缠在陶侃是否是陶渊明的曾祖上。
我们现在要指出的乃是纵然陶侃不是陶渊明的曾祖，他们的关系是不是很密切呢？答案是：也仍然是的。这就是他为他的外祖父孟嘉所写的《晋故征西大将军长史孟府君传》中所说的：“（孟嘉）娶大司马长沙桓公陶侃第十女。”那么，他的外祖乃是陶侃的女婿，也就是，他的外祖母乃陶侃的女儿，这却是千真万确的，这关系难道还不够密切么？一个外祖母是很可以向外孙谈谈自己的父亲的，那么，陶侃的一生可能对陶渊明有很深的印象，不也很自然么？
再看，陶渊明在《命子》诗里对陶侃的崇拜：
在我中晋，业融长沙，
桓桓长沙，伊勋伊德。
天子畴我，专征南国，
功遂辞归，临宠不■。
孰谓斯心，而近可得？
言外是说他比桓温、桓玄、刘裕都高明得多。
陶侃是陶渊明这样关系密切又这样崇拜的人物，他应该给陶渊明以极大极深的影响。事实上也确是如此。
这种影响可分两方面说，一方面是性格、爱好，一方面就是政治态度。
先说性格、爱好。陶侃的出身是寒微的，在当时并不是名族。我们看他初入宦途时困难的情形：
陶公少有大志，家酷贫，与母湛氏同居。同郡范逵素知名，举孝廉，投侃宿。于时冰雪积日，侃室如悬磬，而逵马仆甚多。侃母湛氏语侃曰：“汝但外出留客，吾自为计。”湛头发委地下，为二髲，卖得数斛米；斫诸屋柱，悉割半为薪；剉诸荐，以为马草。日夕，遂设精食，从者皆无所乏。逵既叹其才辩，又深愧其厚意。明旦去，侃追送不已，且百里许。逵曰：“路已远，君宜还。”侃犹不返，逵曰：“卿可去矣，至洛阳，当为美谈。”侃乃返。逵及洛，遂称之于羊晫、顾荣诸人，大获美誉。
