路德维希·范·贝多芬，1770年12月16日出生在莱茵河畔科隆附近、波恩一所破房子的风雨飘摇的小阁楼里。他的祖籍是弗朗德勒。父亲是个庸庸碌碌、嗜酒如命的男高音歌手。母亲是女佣，一个厨师的女儿，最初嫁给一个官宦之家的侍从，丈夫死后跟了贝多芬的父亲。
贝多芬的童年充满艰辛，不像幸运的莫扎特那样享尽家庭的温情。自幼年开始，人生对他而言就是一场为了生存而展开的战斗，凄惨而残暴。父亲想开拓他的音乐天赋，为了赚钱，把他当做神童一样四处炫耀。儿子刚4岁，父亲就一连几个小时把他钉在羽管键琴面前，或者把他关在房间里，逼着他练小提琴，繁重的作业把他累得死去活来，差一点儿让他恨死了音乐这门艺术，以致必得使用暴力才能强迫他学下去。贝多芬从少年时代便需为生计发愁，不得不过早地承担养家糊口的重任。11岁时，他进入了剧院的管弦乐队；13岁时，他成了教堂的管风琴手。1787年，他失去了慈爱的妈妈。“她是那么疼爱我，那么值得我爱，是我最好的朋友！当我能够喊出‘妈妈’这个甜蜜的称呼，而她又能听到的时候，我是多么的幸福啊！”她是患肺病死的，贝多芬以为自己也染上了这种病，常常感到不舒服。除此以外他还患有比病更折磨人的忧郁症。17岁时，他实际上已经成了一家之主，并担负起教育两个弟弟的重任。他不无羞愧地要求酗酒成性的父亲退休，因为父亲已经无力主持门户了；他掌管了父亲的养老金，以免他再糟蹋在酒上。这些悲惨的经历在他年轻的心灵上留下了不可磨灭的烙印。尽管如此，他还是在波恩一个家庭找到了感情上的依托，那便是他一直珍视的勃罗宁一家。他们可爱的女儿埃莱奥诺尔比贝多芬小两岁。贝多芬教她音乐和诗歌。她成了他儿时的友伴，两人之间也许产生过感情。后来，埃莱奥诺尔嫁给了贝多芬的好友韦格勒医生。他们之间终生维持着恬静的君子之交，这一点，从韦格勒和埃莱奥诺尔与他来往的书信中可以看得出来。信写得很恳切。韦格勒夫妇称他为“忠诚的老友”，他则称对方为“亲爱的好韦格勒”。更令人感动的是，后来三人年纪大了，但心灵的青春依旧，热忱不减当年。同时，贝多芬的音乐老师克利斯丁·哥特罗伯·耐弗，也给了贝多芬正确的指导和温馨的友情。他高贵的品格、聪明才智以及艺术观点，同样深深地影响了这位年轻的艺术家。
