寻找达·芬奇其人
在对列奥纳多·达·芬奇（Leonardo da Vinci）的生平维持了八年近乎偶像崇拜的狂热后，我去了他出生的房子，那是一次朝圣之旅。至少我是这么想的。
那是1985年，我和妻子莎拉在佛罗伦萨。到达当地的第二天早上，我们临时起意前往芬奇镇（Vinci）瞻仰达·芬奇故居，而之前我们没有任何计划，当然，我们也从未去过那里。
还有什么比科学史博物馆更好的问路处呢？我见馆门关着，就敲了敲那厚重的木制大门，出人意料的是，门“吱呀”一声开了一条缝，一位女士闻声出来，而后进去请示馆长。不久她与馆长一同回来了。我和莎拉很快就得以乘上列车，驶向十二公里外的恩波利（Empoli）。我们在那里换乘短途巴士到了芬奇镇。原来芬奇是个普通小镇，与那一带的众多镇子没有什么不同，只是它拥有一个小小的博物馆，陈列着在达·芬奇的构想启发下发明出来的机器模型。此外，巨大的路标指向达·芬奇这位巨匠的出生地，标明距离此地三公里。但路标没有说明的是，这三公里路程皆为陡峭山路，我们一路奋力攀登，最终几乎是把自己硬拖到了山顶，但是，一切都是值得的。那里的一栋大石屋，显然是文艺复兴时期建筑的遗迹。我们终于到了。

还有一些游客漫无目的地在屋里闲逛，看上去和我们一样失望透顶。为了莎拉，我努力装出满怀热情的样子，她也在这样做。可还是没用。我们一路劳顿来到我的偶像的诞生地，起初高涨的热情却被冰冷的现实浇灭。不过，这毕竟是他出生的地方，虽然这简素的古旧砖墙似乎没传达给我们任何信息。起初，我们不愿离开，我想，大家都总以为只要一想到自己身处此地，或许就会突然间灵感迸发。然而，二十分钟过去，任何值得一提的事都没发生，我们终于下定决心走了。搭上一位德国游客的奔驰车，我们很快就回到了小镇中心。由于不像上山时那样充满期冀，漫长的下山路令人沮丧。1984年，我们去那里的前一年，是一个大旱之年——现在，每一棵橄榄树依然枯干皱缩，草地呈棕黄色，泥土干巴巴的，甚至快变成沙子了。在这种环境里，很难去想象那富有古典美的画面：金发的小列奥纳多在周围郁郁葱葱的田野上嬉戏，益发被四周大自然的勃勃生机、宏伟壮美吸引。
