如果有人问我“你富有吗？”，我一定毫不犹豫地回答“富有”。当然，从高价物品或者名牌的拥有数来衡量，我可能算不上富有。不过从另一个角度来看的话，我是富有的。因为我能够挑选符合自己审美观的物品来过舒适的生活，即便我选的东西既不昂贵也不是名牌。而让我意识到“富有”的另一层含义的，正是無印良品。
無印良品以反对消费社会的理念诞生于1980年。当时的日本经济快速发展，但出现了两极分化的现象：市场上销售着价格高昂的名牌，也到处充斥着廉价的伪劣商品。在这样的社会风潮中，無印良品开始致力于挖掘物品本身的价值、彻底杜绝浪费。而無印良品的这个理念也存在于以“素”为主旨的日本审美观中。从书院式建筑到茶道、花道乃至日常生活细节，日本人往往能于朴素、简洁中发现强大与美。自古以来，日本人在生活中倾向于认为，简单的一把剪刀里不光注入了能工巧匠的灵魂，里头还住着神明。因此即便是毫不起眼的东西，他们也会珍惜使用。

经历物质匮乏的年代之后，日本正处于物质极大丰富的时代。在业已成熟的时代中，我们不应该关注如何靠物质来丰富生活，而是应该更加关注生活方式本身。作为無印良品的研究项目之一，《無印良品的生活中心》持续探讨我们如何面对当今日本社会的生活方式。我们希望通过中文版的发行，借由我们的研究内容为经济飞速发展环境里的中国人提供有价值的“未来生活”参考方案。
