Book Abstract

一粒种子世界上有一粒种子，同核桃这般大。绿色的外皮非常可爱。凡是看见他的人，没有一个不欢喜他。听说，若是将他种在泥里，就能够透出碧玉一般的芽来。开的花是说不出的美丽，什么玫瑰花、牡丹花、菊花都比不上，而且有浓厚的香气，什么兰花的香气、梅花的香气、芝兰的香气也都比不上。可是从没有人种过他，所以也没有人看见过他的美丽的花，闻过他的花的香气。
国王听见有这样一粒种子，欢喜得只是笑。白而浓的胡子包住他的嘴，仿佛一个树林，现在树林开了个深深的洞——因为笑得合不拢嘴。他说：“我的园里，什么花都有了，北方冰雪底下开的小白花，我派了专使去移了来；南方热带，像盘一样的大莲花也有人拿来进贡。但是，这些都是世界上最平常的花，我弄得到，人家也弄得到，又有什么稀奇？现在有这样一粒种子，只有一粒。等他开出花来，世界上就没有第二棵。这才显出我的尊贵和权力。哈！哈！哈！” 国王就命人把这一粒种子取了来，种在一个白玉盆里。泥是御园里的，筛了再筛，只恐他不细。浇灌的水是金缸里盛着的，滤了再滤，只恐他不干净。每天早晨，国王亲自把这个盆从暖房里搬出来，摆在殿庭之中。晚上又亲自搬进去。寒暑表告诉他天气冷了，就生起暖烘烘的火炉来。
国王睡梦里，也想看盆里透出碧玉一般的芽来。
清醒的时候，不必说了，只在盆的旁边等候。但是哪里有碧玉一般的芽呢？只有一个白玉的盆，盛着灰黑的泥。
时候逃一般地过去，国王种这种子已经两年了，春草发芽的时候，他在盆旁祝福道：“春草回来了，你跟着他们来罢！”秋天许多种子发芽的时候，他又在盆旁祝福道：“第二批萌芽来了，你跟着他们来罢！”但是全没效果！于是国王怒了，他说：“这是死的种子，丑陋的种子，恶臭的种子！我要他何用！” 他就把种子从泥里挖出来，还是从前的样子，同核桃这般大，绿色的外皮非常可爱。他看了也觉讨厌，就向池里一丢。
种子从国王的池里，跟着流水，流到民间的溪里。渔翁在溪上打渔，把他网了起来，高兴叫卖。
富翁听见了，欢喜得只是笑。肥厚的面孔差不多像打足了气的皮球，现在脸皮只是不住地抖动——因为笑得不停。他说：“我的屋里，什么重价的东西都有了：拳头大的金刚钻，鸡子大的蚌珠，都花了金钱买来。但是，这些也是别个富翁所有的，而且只讲金银珠宝，不免带点俗气。现在有这样一粒种子，只有一粒。等他开出花来，既可以比过别个富翁，而且高雅得多了。这才显出我的富足和优越。哈！哈！哈！ ……” 富翁就向渔翁买了这一粒种子，种在一只白金缸里。他特别雇了四个种花的人，专门看护这一粒种子。这四个种花的人都用考试法选取来的：用极难的题目，种植名花的方法，去考问他们，他们都能回答。
选定之后，给他们很丰厚的工资，并且优待他们的妻子，使他们愿意尽心竭力。这四人确能尽心竭力，轮班在白金缸旁边看护，日夜不离。他们懂有种花的方法很多，一切照着所懂的做。他们知道什么是最好的肥料，只选最好的肥料浇灌。
富翁想：“这么养护这粒种子，发芽开花应该加倍地快。花开的时候，我便大宴宾客，同我相仿的富翁都请到，使他们看看我独有的美丽的奇花，使他们佩服我最富有、最优越。”他这么想，刻刻向白金缸里看。但是哪里有碧玉一般的芽呢？只有一个白金的盆，盛着灰黑的泥。
时间逃一般地过去，富翁种这种子也已两年了。
他春季宴客的时候，在缸旁祝福道：“我将宴客了，你帮助我，快点发芽开花罢！”秋季宴客的时候，他又在缸旁祝福道：“我又将宴客了，你帮助我，快点发芽开花罢！”但是全没有效果，于是富翁怒了，他说：“这是死的种子，丑陋的种子，恶臭的种子！我要他何用！”他就把种子从泥里挖出来，还是从前的样子，同核桃这般大，绿色的外皮非常可爱，他看了就觉生气，便向墙外一丢。
