从1806年开始，格林兄弟凭着为子孙后代恢复和保存民间文学遗产的信念，前后经过8年的努力，才完成了收集整理的计划，共搜集整理了210多篇童话故事，最后他们共同编成《儿童与家庭童话集》亦即《格林童话》，于1812年至1815年期间陆续出版。其中以《灰姑娘》、《白雪公主》、《小红帽》、《睡美人》、《糖果屋》、《青蛙王子》、《渔夫和他的妻子》、《野狼和七只小羊》、《大拇指》、《勇敢的小裁缝》、《不莱梅的城市乐手》、《穿靴子的猫》最为著名。
《格林童话》的故事素材来源于三种：第一种是巫术、神魔童话；第二种是动物以及动物与人的故事；第三种是常人童话。故事中的主人公分为两类：一类是善的化身，诸如裁缝、磨坊工、士兵、长工等；另一类是恶的象征，诸如巫婆、魔鬼、强盗、继母等。作者总是把善与恶对立起来描写，同情、歌颂前者，鞭挞、讽刺后者，使其爱憎分明。
《格林童话》的内容广泛，反映了正义与邪恶、善良与凶恶、诚实与虚伪、智慧与愚昧、勇敢与怯弱、勤劳与懒惰等一些带有普遍意义的人生主题，如《青蛙王子》表现了诚实守信的主题；《渔夫和他的妻子》表现了贪婪的主题，这些主题都揭示了简单的人生哲理和价值观念。

Author Description

《格林童话》的作者是格林兄弟，即哥哥雅科布·格林（1785-1863），弟弟威廉·格林（1786-1859）。格林兄弟是德国民间文学研究者、语言学家、民俗学家、历史学家，代表作品《格林童话》。
格林兄弟出生于莱茵河畔哈瑙的一个律师家庭，两人的经历相近，爱好相似，并先后于1802年和1803年入马尔堡大学学习法律。1808年哥哥雅科布在卡塞尔担任拿破仑的弟弟威斯特法伦国王热罗默的私人图书馆管理员。1813年拿破仑兵败之后，威斯特法伦王国被废除，建立了黑森公国，雅科布担任公使馆参赞，参加了维也纳会议。弟弟威廉从1814年起，担任卡塞尔图书馆秘书。1816年雅科布辞去外交职务，担任卡塞尔图书馆第二馆员。1819年格林兄弟获得马尔堡大学名誉博士学位。1829年兄弟俩应汉诺威国王的邀请到格廷根，雅科布除了担任大学教授外，还和弟弟一起担任哥廷根大学图书馆馆员，稍后威廉也担任了大学教授。1837年格林兄弟和另外5位教授因写信抗议汉诺威国王破坏宪法而被免去教授职务，这七位教授被称为格廷根七君子。格林兄弟被逐后回到卡塞尔。1840年底，格林兄弟应普鲁士国王威廉四世之邀去柏林，任皇家科学院院士，并在大学执教。1848年雅科布被选为法兰克福国民议会代表。1859年12月16日，弟弟威廉去世，1863年9月20日，雅科布寿终。兄弟俩去世后都葬于柏林马太教堂墓地。

青蛙王子
很久很久以前，人们的愿望可以变成现实。那时候，有一个国王，他有几个非常美丽的女儿，特别是小女儿，更是美得让人心醉，连见多识广的太阳，每次照在她脸上时，都对她的美丽感到惊诧不已。国王和公主们居住的宫殿附近有一片幽暗的大森林，森林中有棵老菩提树，菩提树下有一个水潭，水潭的水很绿很深。每到夏天天热的时候，最小的那个公主就喜欢来到这片森林，在水潭边乘凉。小公主坐在水潭边感到无聊的时候，就拿出自己喜爱的金球，把金球抛向空中，再用手接住。这成了她最喜爱的游戏。
不巧的是，有一次，小公主伸出两只小手去接金球，金球却没有落进她的手里，而是掉到了地上，而且一下子就滚到了水潭里。小公主两眼紧紧地盯着金球，可是金球忽地一下子在水潭里就没影儿了。因为水潭里的水很深，看不见底，小公主就哭了起来，她的哭声越来越大，哭得伤心极了。哭着哭着，小公主突然听见有人大声说：“哎呀，公主，您这是怎么啦？您这样嚎啕大哭，就连石头听了都会心疼的呀。”听了这话，小公主四处张望，想弄清楚说话声是从哪儿传来的，不料却发现一只青蛙，从水里伸出它那丑陋不堪的肥嘟嘟的大脑袋。
“啊！原来是你呀，游泳健将，”小公主对青蛙说道，“我在这儿哭，是因为我的金球掉进水潭里去了。”
“好啦，不要难过，别哭了，”青蛙回答说，“我有办法帮助您。要是我帮您把您的金球捞出来，您拿什么东西来回报我呢？”
“亲爱的青蛙，你要什么东西都成啊，”小公主回答说，“我的衣服、我的珍珠和宝石，甚至我头上戴着的这顶金冠，都可以给你。”
听了这话，青蛙对小公主说：“您的衣服、您的珍珠、您的宝石，还有您的金冠，我哪样都不想要。不过，要是您喜欢我，让我做您的好朋友，我们一起游戏，吃饭的时候让我和您同坐一张餐桌，用您的小金碟子吃东西，用您的小高脚杯饮酒，晚上还让我睡在您的小床上；要是您答应所有这一切的话，我就潜到水潭里去，把您的金球捞出来。”
“好的，太好了，”小公主说，“只要你愿意把我的金球捞出来，你的一切要求我都答应。”小公主虽然嘴上这么说，心里却想：这只青蛙可真够傻的，尽胡说八道！它只配蹲在水潭里，和其它青蛙一起呱呱叫，怎么可能做人的好朋友呢？
青蛙得到了小公主的许诺之后，把脑袋往水里一扎，就潜入了水潭。过了不大一会儿，青蛙嘴里衔着金球，浮出了水面，然后把金球吐在草地上。
小公主重又见到了自己心爱的玩具，心里别提有多高兴了。她把金球拣了起来，撒腿就跑。
“别跑！别跑！”青蛙大声叫道，“带上我呀！我可跑不了您那么快。
”尽管青蛙扯着嗓子拼命叫喊，可是没有一点儿用。小公主对青蛙的喊叫根本不予理睬，而是径直跑回了家，并且很快就把可怜的青蛙忘得一干二净。
青蛙只好蹦蹦跳跳地又回到水潭里去。
第二天，小公主跟国王和大臣们刚刚坐上餐桌，突然听见啪啦啪啦的声音。随着声响，有个什么东西顺着大理石台阶往上跳，到了门口时，便一边敲门一边大声嚷嚷：“小公主，快开门！”听到喊声，小公主急忙跑到门口，想看看是谁在门外喊叫。打开门一看，原来是那只青蛙，正蹲在门前。小公主见是青蛙，猛然把门关上，转身赶紧回到座位，心里害怕极了。国王发现小公主一副心慌意乱的样子，就问她：“孩子，你怎么会吓成这个样子？该不会是门外有个巨人要把你抓走吧？”“啊，不是的，”小公主回答说：“不是什么巨人，而是一只讨厌的青蛙。”“青蛙想找你做什么呢？”国王问小公主。
