第一章听梅太太讲小人
关于他们，是梅太太第一个告诉我的。不对，她告诉的不是我。那怎么会是我呢—那是个又野、又邋遢、又任性的小女孩，用生气的眼睛看人，据说还嘎吱嘎吱地咬牙。凯特，应该叫她这个名字。对，就是这个女孩—凯特。反正叫她什么名字也没有多大关系：她就这样跑到故事里来了。
在伦敦，梅太太在凯特的爸爸和妈妈的房子里住着两个房间。我想她是他们的一位亲戚吧。她的卧室在二楼，她的起居室在叫作“早餐室”的房间。早晨当阳光射在烤面包和果酱上时，早餐室是很不错的，但到下午光线暗了，房间似乎变小了，充满了一种奇怪的暗淡银光，那是房间里的暮色，有一种忧郁的气氛。不过凯特是个孩子，她喜欢这种气氛。在吃下午茶点前，她经常到梅太太的起居室里来。梅太太教她钩花边。

“不是的，”凯特拉着她的鞋扣说，“我丢掉钩针了……”她们正在做一条床罩……把毛线钩的一个个方块缝在一起，还差三十来个方块。“我记得清清楚楚我把它放在了哪里，”她急急忙忙说下去，“就放在我床边书柜的底下一层，可是不见了。”
“底下一层？”梅太太重复说了一遍，她自己的钩针在火光中不停地闪烁，“靠近地板吗？”“是的，”凯特说，“但是我把地板看过了。地毯下面也看过了。到处都看过了。毛线倒还在那里。就在我放下的地方。”
“噢，天啊，”梅太太轻轻叫了一声，“不要是他们也在这房子里！”
“他们是谁？”凯特问道。
“借东西的小人啊！”梅太太说。在暗淡的光线中，她似乎在微笑。
凯特有点惊慌地看着她。“有这样的人吗？”过了一会儿她问道。
“什么样的人？”
凯特眨着她的眼皮。“住在别人房子里的小人……专门借走别人东西的！”
梅太太放下她手里的活儿。“你说呢？”她问。
“我不知道，”凯特说着把眼光移开，使劲拉她的鞋扣，“这是不可能有的。不过，”她抬起她的头，“有时候我又觉得一定有。”
“为什么你觉得一定有？”梅太太问道。
“因为有许多东西不见了。比方说别针吧。工厂没完没了地生产别针，每天人们买别针，然而就在你要用别针的时候，别针却没有了。它们都在哪里呢？就在要用的时候，它们都上哪里去了？再拿缝衣针来说吧，”她说下去，“我妈妈买了那么多缝衣针—至少有几百枚—它们不可能满屋子都是。”
“对，不可能满屋子都是。”梅太太同意说。
“还有许多别的东西，我们一直在买。买了又买。例如铅笔、火柴、火漆、发卡、图画钉、顶针……”
“还有帽针，”梅太太插进来说，“吸墨水纸。”
“对，吸墨水纸，”凯特同意说，“但不是帽针。”
“这你就错了，”梅太太说着又把活儿拿起来，“我说帽针是有道理的。”
凯特望着她。“有道理？”她重复说了一遍，“我是说—有什么道理？”
“这个嘛，确切地说是有两个道理。帽针是一种非常有用的武器，而且，”梅太太忽然笑起来，“不过这听起来太荒谬了，再说，”她犹豫了一下，“这都已经是很久很久以前的事了！”
“可是跟我讲讲吧，”凯特说，“跟我讲讲你知道的关于帽针的事。你见过吗？”
梅太太用惊异的眼光看看她。“什么，当然见过……”她开始说。
“我说的不是帽针，”凯特很急地叫道，“我说的是你所说的那种人—那种借东西的小人！”
梅太太深深吸了口气。“这倒没有，”她马上回答说，“我从来没有见过。”
“但是有人见过，”凯特叫道，“你知道的。我看得出来你知道！”
“嘘，”梅太太说，“用不着大喊大叫！”她低下头来看凯特仰起来的脸，随后微笑着把目光移向远处。“我有一个弟弟……”她犹豫地说起来。
凯特跪在坐垫上。“他看见他们了？”
“我不知道，”梅太太摇着头说，“我根本不知道！”她抹平她膝盖上的活儿。“他是个吹牛大王，给我们，就是我姐姐和我，讲了那么多不可能有的事情。后来，”她平静地说，“这已经是许多年以前的事，他在西北边境阵亡了。他成为他那个团的上校。他们说他是英勇牺牲的……”
“你只有这位弟弟吗？”
“是的，他是我们的小弟弟。我想正是因为这个缘故，”她想了一下，仍旧暗自微笑，“对了，所以他告诉我们这种不可能有的事情，这种奇怪的幻想。我想他是出于妒忌，因为我们比他大—我们比他会看书。他想使我们看得起他，也许是想使我们大吃一惊。不过，”她看着壁炉里的火，“他这个人也有点特别—也许因为我们是在印度那些神秘事物、魔法和传奇之中长大的吧—我们总觉得他能看到别人所看不到的东西。有时候我们知道他是在戏弄我们，但有时候……对了，我们可说不准……”她俯身向前，照她的老样子十分干净地刷掉炉栅下一蓬火灰，接着拿着刷子，重新看着炉火。“他不很强壮，第一次从印度回国就害了风湿热，缺了整整一学期课，送到乡下去休养，住在一位老姑婆家里。后来我自己也去了。这是座很奇怪的古宅……”她把刷子挂回铜钩上，用手帕擦干净双手，接着把她的活儿捡起来。“最好把灯点亮。”她说。
“等一等吧，”凯特靠过来求她，“请你讲下去。请你告诉我……”
“可是我已经告诉你了。”
“不，你还没有。这座古宅……他是在那里看见了……他真看见了吗……”
梅太太大笑。“他在那里看见了借东西的小人？是的，他正是这么告诉我们的……他要我们相信。而且，他好像不仅是看见了他们，还跟他们很熟，成了他们生活中的一分子，事实上，差不多可以说他自己也成了一个借东西的人……”
“噢，请一定告诉我。谢谢你。试试看把事情回想起来吧。从头讲起！”
“我都记得，”梅太太说，“真奇怪，比许多发生过的真实事情记得还要清楚。也许它也是件真实的事情，只是我不知道。你瞧，重返印度的时候，我的弟弟和我在船上共住一个房间，我的姐姐通常和我们的保姆睡在一起。在那几个极其炎热的夜里，我们老是睡不着，我的弟弟会接连几个钟头讲那个讲了又讲的老话题，把细节讲了一遍又一遍—他们是怎么样的人，他们做些什么事，以及……”
“他们？他们到底是谁？”
“是妈妈霍米莉、爸爸波德和小阿丽埃蒂。”
“波德？”
“对，连他们的名字也不大对头。他们自以为有了自己的名字—但和我们人类的名字大为两样—一听就知道，它们也是借来的。连亨德列里叔叔和埃格尔蒂娜的名字也是如此。他们所有的一切都是借来的，根本没有一样东西是他们自己的。一样也没有。除此以外，我弟弟说他们非常敏感和自负，自以为拥有整个世界。”

“他们认为人类只是创造出来干脏活的—做他们的巨人奴隶。至少在他们之间是这么说的。不过我弟弟说，他认为他们在地底下都担惊受怕。我弟弟想，正因为他们担惊受怕，所以才长得那么小。而且他们一代比一代小，也越来越隐蔽。古时候在英国的一些地区，我们的祖先似乎还公开提起过这些‘小人’。”

“索菲姑婆的旧屋自然是很理想的—虽然他们中还有人不满意，觉得有点冷，又太空。我们这位索菲老姑婆由于二十年前一场狩猎事故而终年卧床。房子里除她以外，别的人就只有烧饭的德赖弗太太和园丁克兰普福尔了，难得还会有个女仆什么的。我弟弟生风湿热以后到那里去，也长期卧床。在他到那里的起先几个礼拜，那些借东西的小人并不知道他来了。
“他睡在一间旧的儿童卧室里，外间是教室。当时这间教室堆满乱七八糟的破旧东西—奇怪的皮箱、坏了的缝纫机、写字台、裁缝用的假人、桌子、几把椅子，还有一架没用的自动钢琴—因为玩这自动钢琴的孩子们，也就是索菲姑婆的孩子们，早已长大成人，结了婚、死了或者离开了。卧室的门对着这间教室。我弟弟躺在他的床上，能够看到教室壁炉上面挂着的滑铁卢大战油画，角落里的一个玻璃门柜子，柜子里的钩子上和架子上陈列着一套玩具茶具—古色古香，十分精致。夜里教室的门如果开着，他可以一直看到点着灯的过道通到楼梯口。每天天黑下来时，他看见德赖弗太太在楼梯口出现就感到宽慰。德赖弗太太总是端着一盘东西在过道上走过，给索菲姑婆端去饼干和一瓶白葡萄酒。德赖弗太太下楼前，又总是在过道上停一下，把煤气灯旋小，让它只发出一点暗淡的蓝光。然后他看着她噔噔噔下楼，在楼梯栏杆间慢慢地一点点消失不见。
“过道底下是门厅，门厅里有一座时钟，夜间他能听到它当当地报时。这是一座老爷时钟，很旧了。利顿·巴扎德的弗里思先生每个月来给这时钟上发条，就像他的父亲在他以前、他的叔公在他的父亲以前那样。据弗里思先生所知，这座时钟已有整整八十年没有停过，而在此以前，又不知有多少年从未停过。了不起的是，它肯定从来没有移动过。它贴近护壁板，周围地上的石板洗得那么勤，因此里面高出来了，我弟弟是这么说的。
