下午三点左右，大家的耐性终于得到了报偿。他们看见一辆汽车开上了车道。那是一辆非常旧的汽车，行李鼓鼓囊囊，都快堆到车外边了。一阵兴奋的骚动席卷过围观的动物，每只眼睛都紧盯着房子的新主人。
男人第一个下车。他抽着烟斗，阿纳达斯叔叔赞许地闻着空气。
兔爸爸的眼睛紧盯着那位女士不放。她从车上搬下了一个大篮子，正准备打开盖子。
兔妈妈屏住呼吸，所有的小田鼠都哆嗦起来。原来是一只巨大的虎斑灰猫出现在眼前。灰猫伸伸前腿，又伸伸后腿，然后慢慢地、庄严地大步走上前门台阶。
田鼠们嘁嘁嚓嚓，小声说着他们好害怕。兔妈妈呢，好像快晕倒了……

罗伯特·罗素是美国著名的作家和插画家。他是图画书《爱花的牛》的作者，曾获得过凯迪克金奖与纽伯瑞金奖，许多中国读者对他也非常熟悉。
打开《兔子坡》这本书，只要读上四个自然段，不到五百字，我们立刻能看到一组活灵活现的形象：活泼好动的小乔吉、心重话多的兔妈妈和咬文嚼字的兔爸爸。作者塑造角色的功力是那样深厚，笔下的动物的性格夸张中不失真实，与人类并无区别。好的艺术作品会有一个共同的特点，那就是匠心独具却又不显匠心。作者并没有刻意制造悬念，或者提前安排笑料，但读者不知不觉中就会认为，这个故事一定是有趣的，因为我们看到了有趣的、值得关注的角色。

这本书最令我感动的要数第四章中阿纳达斯叔叔那段长长的独白。阿纳达斯叔叔是一位有趣的老单身汉：他不爱干净，家里乱七八糟，不识字还死要面子，说话粗野，虚张声势，思路夸张，总会想到事情最坏的可能性……但他同时又是一位经验丰富、热爱生活的老居民，他对小乔吉说出的那一大段话，正可以视为这本书的主旨。
阿纳达斯叔叔从动物的角度提到了“英国红衣士兵”——美国独立战争；“年轻人……穿着蓝色的制服”——美国南北战争，以及战争所带来的坏时光、战争过后的好时光。他告诉小乔吉：“有好时光，也有坏时光，但它们都会过去……总有新时光到来。”这是一个朴素的道理，但其中却包含着人生全部的智慧——等待和希望。
