三个孩子，两个男孩叫杰里和吉米，一个女孩叫凯瑟琳。当然，杰里是爱称，他的本名是杰拉尔德，也不是你会以为的杰里迈亚，尽管杰里迈亚的爱称也是杰里。吉米的本名自然是詹姆斯。凯瑟琳这个名字在没人时，不是叫她凯西就是叫她凯蒂，两个兄弟跟她好的时候还叫她好猫咪，跟她不好的时候叫她抓人猫咪。
他们三兄妹在英格兰西部一个小镇上的学校住读，当然，两兄弟在一所学校，他们的姐妹在另一所学校，因为男女生同校这个明智的做法，还没有像我所希望的那样普遍采用。因此，他们通常只能到了星期六和星期日在一位老小姐家里相聚。这位老小姐是个好心人，可是在这样的家里不能玩。你知道这种人家，对不对？这种人家总有点什么让人觉得连自由自在地讲话也不大可能，更不用说玩了。因此，他们只盼着放假回家，大家整天在一起，玩也可以，聊天也可以。那里还有汉普郡的森林和田野，它们充满了有趣的东西可以看，有趣的事情可以做。他们的表姐妹贝蒂也要上那儿去，计划都定好了。贝蒂的学校比他们的先放假，因此她先去了汉普郡的家。可没想到，她一到那里就出麻疹，结果我在讲的那三个孩子根本不能回家。你可以想像他们的心情。想到要在哈维老小姐家过整整七个礼拜，那是万万受不了的，于是三个孩子都写信回家这么说。这件事让他们的爸爸妈妈大为吃惊，因为他们一直以为，孩子们能有亲爱的哈维小姐照顾真是再好不过了。然而他们还是“抱着宽容态度”，这是杰拉尔德说的，最后经过一番书信和电报往来，决定让两个男孩待到凯瑟琳的学校去，因为女生这时候都走了，别的女教师也走了，只剩下一位法国女教师。

接着是一个非常整洁、棕色皮肤、个子细高、样子好玩的男孩敲响了客厅的门，里面那位法国小姐正坐着在看一本黄色封面的书，没什么事。杰拉尔德总是能够让人一见就觉得他有趣，和陌生大人打交道的时候，这是非常有用的本领。做法是把他那双灰色眼睛睁得挺大，让嘴角微垂，做出一种温柔的请求表情，就像已故的方特勒罗伊小爵士那副样子——至少他现在一定已经很老，而且一本正经得可怕。
“请进！”法国小姐用声音很尖的法国话说。于是他进去了。
“有话要说吗？”她用法国话不大耐烦地问。
“但愿我没打搅您，”杰拉尔德说，他油滑的嘴里好像牛油不会融化似的。
