Author Description

罗拉·英格斯·怀德（1867－1957），美国儿童文学作家。出生于威斯康星州的大森林，幼年时跟随父母四处迁徙，足迹几乎遍及美国西部，15岁时在拓荒者们开办的小学执教。罗拉的一生漂泊不定，但又卓有成就。罗拉65岁时在女儿的启发下开始文学创作，到90岁去世25年间，她将自己的成长经历写成9本“小木屋”系列小说，以极其细腻、诚恳的笔法，记录了美国西部拓荒时代的历史，刻画了拓荒人们勤劳、质朴、善良的品性和勇敢的精神。

Book Abstract

小木屋是被森林包围着，远远望去，大森林就像一片林海，郁郁葱葱，茂林繁枝，参天大树中间夹杂着些低低的矮树，整个森林像是用绿色涂抹了一般。进入森林里，无论你朝着哪个方向走，沿途都是树，而且是长得一样的树，有时花上整整一天、一星期、甚至是一个月的时间，除了能看见那些模样相同的树木外，再也看不见任何的东西。在这里，既没有搭建的其他房屋，也没有任何新开辟的道路。那片茫茫的树林，还有栖居在大森林里的一些野生动物们是这里的一切。大森林里生活着狼和熊；麝香鼠在树上上蹿下跳、水貂在水里捉鱼吃、水獭在小溪边上躺着晒太阳；狐狸把洞穴隐藏在小山冈上树的背后，鹿群时不时地出来在森林里到处游荡。一切都是那么惬意，那么和谐。
从小木屋的任何一个方向出发，不论你怎么走，也走不出连绵的大森林。在大森林边缘林木覆盖薄弱的地带，才矗立着几幢小木屋。小木屋被掩埋在这片大森林里，显得那么渺小。从小木屋的窗户往外看，不管你怎么看，视力所能触及到的也只有小木屋外的几棵大树，大树遮挡住了所有的视线。
有一条狭窄的羊肠小道在门前绕过，曲曲折折地延伸到大森林里，一直消失在森林的最深处，小女孩的父亲告诉过她，在那里生活着很多野生动物。
小女孩名叫罗拉，住在小木屋的还有她的爸爸和妈妈，名字叫做玛莉的姐姐、还有一个被唤作小嘉琳的妹妹。
她称呼她的父母为“爸、妈”，不叫“父亲、母亲”，也不叫“爸爸、妈妈”。因为在那个时候，这样年纪的小孩儿都这样叫，和现在不一样。
每当夜晚来临的时候，她总会害怕得不敢去睡觉。这时候，爸会走过来，在她头上轻轻地摸一摸，说：“放心地去睡吧，有杰克在门口守着，狼是根本靠近不了木屋的。“罗拉才放心地爬上床，钻进被窝，紧挨在玛莉的身旁躺下，但是迟迟进入不了梦乡。
罗拉躺在装有小滑轮的床上，两只眼睛瞅着木屋粗壮又挺直的横梁。她此刻还是毫无睡意，听着木屋外面稀稀落落地传来树木之间的声响。在森林深处的黑夜里，不时也会有狼的嚎叫声传来。这嚎叫声，时而近，时而远。过不了一会儿，狼会跑到离小木屋更近些的地方嚎叫
狼的声音不但吓人，长相也是非常可怕，罗拉听说狼吃小孩儿。不过，她想：院外有篱笆墙的围护，屋子里门背后挂着爸的猎枪，圆木做成的木门也是结实的。她便不怎么害怕了，想着想着，罗拉便慢慢睡着了。
在梦里，爸把她从床上抱起来，带她到窗户旁边，让她看看狼的模样。她脑海里，想象着狼的模样，不敢直视。狼群里，有两只最大的狼，蹲坐在离小木屋稍近的篱笆栏旁边，仔细看起来很像两只长毛狗，但比狗凶多了。它们猛地把鼻子高高地扬起来，盯着小木屋外的杰克瞅了会儿，又抬头对着皎洁的月亮，大声地嚎叫，像是在挑衅。
