《吹小号的天鹅》：
萨姆穿过沼泽地回营地去，一路上想，是不是要把他看到的事情告诉爸爸。
“我只知道一点，”他心里说。“明天我还要到那个小池塘去。我要一个人去。要是我把今天看到的事情告诉了爸爸，他就要跟我一起去了。我不敢说那是个非常好的主意。”
萨姆十一岁，姓比弗。按他那个岁数来说，他的身体挺棒，黑头发，黑眼睛，像个印第安人。萨姆走路也像印第安人，直着腿一步一步走，不发出什么响声。他穿过的沼泽地很荒凉——没有脚印，脚踩下去黏糊糊的，走起来很费劲。每走上四五分钟，萨姆就从口袋里掏出指南针看看方向，算准他是在朝西走。加拿大是个大地方。它的大部分是荒野。在加拿大西部的森林和沼泽地带一旦迷了路，那事情就严重了。
萨姆这么一路跋涉，心里一个劲儿琢磨着他看到的奇迹。世界上没有多少人看到过这种吹号天鹅的窝。可在这个春天日子里，偏让萨姆在荒凉的池塘上给找到了一个。他看到了两只雪白的大天鹅，雪白的长脖子，黑色的嘴巴。他一辈子里以前见过的任何东西，还从来没有使他产生过一种感觉，跟他在这荒凉小池塘上看到这两只大天鹅时所产生的感觉完全一样。它们比他以前见过的鸟大得多。它们的窝也大——一个树枝和草堆起来的大墩。雌天鹅坐在几个天鹅蛋上，雄天鹅慢慢地走过来走过去在守护着它。
萨姆回到帐篷，又累又饿，看见他爸爸正在煎两条鱼做晚饭。
“你上哪儿去了？”比弗先生问他。
“探险，”萨姆回答说。“我去了离这里大约一英里半的一个池塘。就是我们来的时候从飞机上看见的那个。它不大——根本没有我们这里的这个湖大，连比也不能比。”

但是在生活中，他最喜欢的莫过于和他爸爸这样到加拿大来旅行露营。比弗太太对森林兴趣不大，因此她难得同来——总是萨姆和比弗先生来。他们坐自己的汽车到美国和加拿大交界的边境，进入加拿大。到了加拿大这边，比弗先生就请当地一位专门飞行于人烟稀少地区的飞行员，开飞机把他们送到这里湖边，他们在这里搭上帐篷，待上几天，钓鱼，闲逛和探险。比弗先生主要是钓鱼和闲逛。萨姆探险。到了时间，那位飞行员又来把他们接回去。他的外号叫矮子。他们一听见他的飞机声，就跑出来向他招手，看着他把飞机降落到湖面上，靠到码头上来。这些日子，这些在森林中的日子，是萨姆生活中最快活的日子，它们远离一切——没有汽车，没有马路，没有人，没有喧闹声，没有学校，没有家庭作业，没有问题，除了一个问题，就是不要迷路。当然，还有一个问题，就是他长大了干什么。这个问题是每个孩子都有的。
