《市场：资源配置的决定因素》：
由此可见，房地产的发展并不能算是经济的有效增长。各地政府在向上级汇报GDP增长率、财政收入增长率的时候，其实对于大多数老百姓来说，感受最多的就是通货膨胀，别无其他好处。
美国著名经济学家曼昆在《经济学原理》中引用了罗伯特·肯尼迪1968年竞选总统时激烈批判GDP的言论：“GDP并没有考虑到我们孩子的健康、他们的教育质量，或者他们游戏的快乐。它也没有包括我们的诗歌之美或者婚姻的稳定……”可见，GDP不是万能的。
但是，没有GDP行不行呢？答案也是不行。GDP在统计上无可替代，只不过我们不能把GDP的增长简单等同于发展。曼昆曾经说过：“GDP没有衡量我们孩子的健康，但GDP高的国家负担得起孩子更加好的医疗保健。GDP没有衡量孩子们的教育质量，但GDP高的国家负担得起更好的教育制度。GDP没有衡量我们的诗歌之美，但GDP高的国家可以教育更多公民阅读和欣赏诗歌。”
从现实看，搞GDP崇拜不利于发挥市场在资源配置中的决定性作用，也不利于转方式、调结构，更不利于改善民生。但是从未来进行考量的话，我国潜在的增长率下降是一种必然，再去刻意追求高速度增长就显得太不切合实际了。因此对于当下的中国来说，我们要重视GDP，但不能唯认GDP，我们不能告别GDP，但要告别GDP崇拜。
