国际经济组织在其发展过程中呈现出了不向的特点，具体如下。
一、全球性国际经济组织与区域性国际经济组织并行发展
全球性国际经济组织的出现与发展，从根本上说是现代化科技发展、世界生产力发展的要求和结果。世界经济的区域集团化是全球化的一个阶梯，区域性国际经济组织是最终实现经济全球化的重要步骤和途径，经济全球化是区域性国际经济组织的最终归宿。二者在相当长的时期内将同时存在，并行发展。
1945年成立的国际货币基金组织（IMF）、世界银行（WB）和1947年建立的关税与贸易总协定（GATT，简称关贸总协定）是国际经济秩序的三大支柱，奠定了战后国际经济关系的基本规则。在这些国际经济贸易组织的推动下，许多国家和地区的国际贸易体制和汇率制度纳人到世界统一体制中。国际货币基金组织的宗旨是促进国际货币合作和国际贸易的扩大与平衡发展，促进汇率稳定，协助建立成员国之间经常性交易的多边支付制度，帮助消除阻碍世界贸易发展的外汇限制，对其成员国的汇率和金融政策进行监督，并作出相应的制度规定。世界银行是世界最大的多边开发援助机构和借贷机构。国际货币基金组织和世界银行在向成员国提供贷款时都明确提出政策要求，推动其成员国的经济改革和政策调整。关贸总协定是世界各国为促进自由贸易而进行的一系列多边贸易谈判，要求在世界范围内逐步降低关税和其他贸易障碍，进而取消国际贸易中的歧视待遇，实现贸易自由化。关贸总协定各国达成的多边贸易协定推动着缔约国逐步开放国内市场，实行自由贸易政策。关贸总协定在1995年1月过渡为世界贸易组织（WTO，简称世贸组织），这表明在全球经济合作中，贸易领域的统一规范已经形成并强化6国际资本在全球大规模迅速的流动和欧元的诞生，需要国际货币基金组织和世界银行进行改革，制定统一规范的全球金融监管，这已经成为国际社会的共同要求。
随着经济生活国际化的发展，各国经济发展中的相互依赖日益加深，相互影响日益增强，各国越来越需要对彼此间的经济发展、经济政策的制定和执行进行协调，以求共同发展。当单个主权国家无法独立解决自身经济发展过程中出现的问题时，必然促使同一地区的国家携手合作，以一定的国际分工为基础，通过各自让渡部分经济主权，在再生产的某些环节、某些领域组成超国家的区域性国际经济组织。这种区域性国际经济组织以1958年成立韵欧洲经济共同体（EEC）为发端，截至2005年年底，区域性国际经济组织已达140多个，包括150多个国家，遍布欧洲、北美、南美、亚洲、非洲和大洋洲，其内部贸易额占世界贸易总额的80％以上。
