从产品生产企业所投入的资金、技术和设备来看，绝大多数是上海本地的民族工业企业所经营的，但也有少数是早期外国企业在上海地区所投资生产的行业内名牌产品。如英商密丰绒线厂生产的“蜜蜂”牌绒线，美商沙利文食品公司生产的“沙利文”牌糖果、饼干，美商海宁洋行生产的“美女”牌冷饮，英商上海中国肥皂公司生产的“日光”牌肥皂等。由于这些外国企业家在上海地区生产的名牌产品品质精良、声誉较高，一度赢得很多国内消费者的青睐。故这里作者为尊重近代上海工业历史发展的实际情况和本来面目，酌情收入一些当时由外国商人在上海地区组织生产的名牌洋货产品。

左旭初，1958年9月生。上海教育学院（今华东师范大学）中文系毕业，研究员。长期从事中国近现代经济史、商标法律史等研究，其中包括近代中国工业史、商业史、行业史、企业史、包装史、广告史及艺术设计史原件史料，近代名牌产品及包装实物的收藏、研究，共三十余年。1999年11月5日，其独自创办我国第一家商标博物馆。中央电视台、《中国工商报》和《中国知识产权报》等媒体先后报道。曾先后在北京、上海、杭州、长沙和呼和浩特等地，单独举办“百年商标法律图片展”、“抗战时期商标史料展”、“中国近代名牌产品展”、“早期世博会获奖产品展”和“近代名牌产品包装展”等各种特色展览十多次。2012年5月18日，又创办“旭初老包装博物馆”。
近年来，已先后正式出版《中国商标史话》、《老商标》、《近代纺织品商标图典》、《中国近代商标简史》、《民国纺织品商标》、《中国商标法律史》（近现代部分）、《早期世博会中国获奖产品商标图鉴》、《著名企业家与名牌商标》和《中国老字号与早期世博会》等著作。参编《中国庙会大观》、《上海工商行政管理志》和《工商行政管理论文选》等著作十六本，发表学术论文等一百余篇。

“飞虎”牌油漆（振华油漆公司）
上海振华油漆公司生产的“飞虎”牌油漆，由我国近代民族工商业者、浙江省鄞县人邵晋卿先生创办于上海虹口百老汇路（今大名路）永成里。该公司的创建及“飞虎”牌油漆的成名，还有这样一个过程。
早年，邵晋卿在英商祥生船厂任职。日常工作中，他经常接触各种油漆涂料。正值第一次世界大战爆发，由于交通梗阻，进口油漆数量锐减，这给船舶维修带来不便，而国内也没有一家造漆厂。邵晋卿感到这是发展民族油漆工业的一个良机，由此萌发了要创办造漆厂的想法。他多次与同行好友聚会商讨筹建造漆厂之事，在得知同行已于1915年9月率先创办上海开林油漆公司后，他便加快了筹建造漆厂的脚步。经过精心准备，在筹措白银600两后，邵晋卿于1916年9月成功创建了造漆厂。工厂设立时叫振华实业公司，实际生产的只有两名技师和两名工人，使用的油漆商标有“飞虎”牌、“双旗”牌等。之后，公司还陆续注册有“三羊”、“太极”、“牡丹”、“无敌”和“宝塔”等13种商标，其中“飞虎”牌商标在同行中影响最大，社会知名度最高。从“飞虎”牌商标图样看，为一头生长双翅的飞虎，异常凶猛。自然界的老虎已是百兽之王，这里再将老虎长上翅膀，真是“如虎添翼”。振华油漆公司希望自己生产的各类油漆产品，今后在同行中是“强中更强”、“优中更优”。
1917年，邵晋卿辞去原先在祥生船厂的职务，专门从事油漆制造工作。他亲自订立公司章程，向社会公开招股，同时还得到好友乐振葆的鼎力相助。有了一定的经济基础后，他便将“达利”、“达民”两家同行小厂并入公司。期间，他还购置了一台摇轧油漆机、一台小锅炉，并将公司迁至狄思威路（今溧阳路）501号。1918年，为了谋求公司的进一步发展，邵晋卿将光华红粉厂、兴业油漆公司和几家颜料厂盘进，并将公司迁至交通更为便捷的苏州河北岸边潭子湾路538号。此时，邵晋卿将原振华实业公司更名为振华油漆公司。为了便于生产，公司在内部分设铅粉部、化炼部、煎油部、飞磨部和油漆部等。为了提高产品质量，公司聘请了技术骨干、机械工程师萧贤钢等，工人也由最初的2人增至15人。“飞虎”牌油漆等产品月产约为30吨，年销售额为白银1.8万两。
