胡雪岩真是高瞻远瞩，他深明大义之人，江湖上有云：“你做初一，我做十五；你吃肉来我喝汤。”这意思是说，好处不能占绝，干事情不能吃干抹净，一点后路都不留给别人。胡雪岩就不是这种人。总会给别人留有余地。人家前任知府已经被扫地出门，下台一鞠躬，倒霉到家，你新官上任之际，总得替人家想想，送对方一顿“节敬”，自己没损失什么，却颇能让别人见情，何乐而不为呢！
这道理讲起来也没什么，但包括王有龄在内，都没法子看清楚，还要胡雪岩点出来，王老哥才恍然大悟，从善如流。撺掇王有龄早早去抢“节敬”的那批左右人等，没哪个是蠢货，他们全是聪明人，只不过聪明过了头，目光只在眼前一亩三分地打转，有了今天没有明天，根本没替别人想想。
再说王有龄身兼三大职务：既顾得了湖州府，又顾得了乌程县，可就顾不了杭州城里的海运局，这个时候正好胡雪岩走捐官路子，在王有龄的推荐下，胡雪岩出任海运局委员，等于王有龄在海运局的代理人。
对此，胡雪岩还是感到很奇怪。胡雪岩就对王有龄说，海运局里有个周委员，资格老、辈分高，人家苦等久候，拉长了脖子等升官，原地踏步多少年，怎么不考虑周委员，而选择我胡雪岩当代理？
王有龄就不好说了，反正周委员已经被我收服，如果由周某当代理也行，凡事还是与胡雪岩商量，等于还是胡雪岩幕后代理。既然如此，就应该把代理职位赏给周委员。
俗话说：“花花轿子人抬人”，轿夫有如韩信点兵，当然是多多益善。照胡雪岩的做法，王有龄等于有胡、周两个人在海运局替他抬轿子，要是直接委托胡雪岩代理职务，那么，别人是怎样看待的，可是，胡雪岩聪明过人，知道出入其间，相差极大，任何人都能看清楚这些道理，可惜的是，多数的“聪明人”都是小聪明，没法子像胡雪岩看得那么远。

在清朝末年间广泛流传至今：“北有同仁堂，南有庆余堂”；“不负众望，江南药王”。这些妇孺皆知的广告语反映了当时杭州胡庆余堂国药声名之隆，或许诸君有所不知，它只不过是创办人胡雪岩在当年宏大事业中极小的一部分的至名标志。
胡雪岩作为19世纪70～80年代中国商界名人，享有“经商要学胡雪岩”的美誉，他有着充满传奇色彩的命运：在太平天国兴起时，他适逢乱世风云，通过夤缘权贵显要，纳粟助赈，为朝廷效犬马之劳。他资助王有龄，知其不可为而为之，知其不可赌而赌之，结果王有龄成为他实现梦想的阶梯；洋务运动展开，他延洋匠、引设备，睁眼看世界，颇有功绩；左宗棠出关西征，平定新疆叛乱，他筹洋款、供粮械、克济军需，功匠前敌。结果是朝中有人好做事，左宗棠使他的事业如日中天。胡雪岩倚靠官方这棵大树，开设钱庄、当铺，广揽财富。他周旋于政府势力、漕帮首领、外商买办之间，可谓八面玲珑，手腕奇高，他慧眼识人，用人之术，商道韬略，可谓空前绝后，博大精深。他以突破自身的非凡造诣营造了一生不朽的勋业。从一介贫民一跃成为富可敌国、显赫一时的“红顶商人”。此后他斡旋于红顶子、洋买办、生意场之间。构筑了以钱庄、当铺为依托的金融网。以博爱为宗旨开设了国药号“庆余堂”，广施丹药接济世人，乃至军旅，得获“仁义商神”美誉。最后，他外受洋商联合排挤、内遭权贵投阱下石，终至落拓。
