谁都可以有口齿伶俐的演讲口才
我第一次当教授当众演讲的课程是从1912年开始的，这一年发生了一件轰动全世界的大事：“泰坦尼克号”邮轮在北大西洋的冰海沉没了——很多人为此在热议或悲伤。从1912年到现在，已有50多万人在我的讲习班中毕业了。
我记得，我用示范表演给学生上了第一堂演讲课。在通常情况下，我会请几个学生上台来，让他们说说自己为什么要来我这里学习演讲，还要求他们说清楚自己到底想从训练中得到哪些——因为他们此行的目的决定他们能学到什么。
学生上台以后，众说纷纭，不同的人目的各不相同，并且每个人在言语上的表达方式都不一样。但让我惊讶的是，几乎所有人陈述的理由和基本要求都惊人的一样：
“每当我当着很多人讲话时，我会非常紧张。总是担心自己说错话，所以精力总是不能集中，从而也就无法表达清楚自己的观点。更糟糕的是，有时都不知自己在说些什么。
“我希望通过这次学习能增强说话的自信心，要是在任何场合都能随心所欲地思考问题，并能泰然自若地当众站起来演讲，我就觉得不枉此行了。
……”
学生的发言听起来真的很耳熟，因为我们在平时都会听到这样的言论，许多人都有这样的感觉。的确，谁不希望自己侃侃而谈呢？哪怕是付出再多的时间和金钱，他们都是愿意的。难道不是吗？你看看你自己，现在当你翻开这本书的时候，已经说明你同样也希望自己有获得演讲成功能力。你的想法是不是和那些发言的学生一致呢？
如果你来到我的课堂，我想像肯定也会问我：“卡耐基老师，我口才很差，你真的能将我培养出面对观众时能口齿伶俐地演讲的能力吗?”
我的回答是肯定的，前提是你自己要认真去学习，按照我的方式去学。因为在我的一生中，我几乎将我所有的精力都用在帮助人们消除恐惧，培养勇气和信心上了。
我把我举办的培训班上的各种奇迹，写成好几十本书，但这不是一个获得某种能力的关键，因为问题不在我如何做、如何去建议，只有你根据我提供的方法和建议去练习，只有这样，你就一定能获得我所培养的某种能力。
在演讲的时候，我们经常会有这样的感受：要么面对听众，无法冷静地思考，要么身体就会无端地颤抖。其实，在我看来，这些问题都是能够克服的。只要你能够经常练习，你的这些恐惧感就会逐渐地消失。演讲的恐惧感消失了，你演讲的自信心就产生了。这时，你就会成功的演讲了——这本书就是帮助你实现这一目的的。本书不同于一般的教科书，既不罗列一堆说话技巧，也不教你如何发声、发音，它主要是以你现有的基础作起点，用具体的方法来训练成人的演讲。而读者所要做的就是学习书中的各种建议，并加以应用。
没有准备，演讲会失败
很多年前，一位非常显赫的政府官员，准备在纽约的一次午餐会上做主持人。这次将有几千人都在等着听他演讲，想听一听他布置的工作情况。
这位官员一上台我就发现，他没有为这次的演讲做什么准备。演讲刚开始，他想即兴讲一点自己的感想，但结果却无话可说。于是他从上衣口袋里掏出一叠记事本来，想从中找一点演讲的东西，但记事本往往是杂乱无章的，根本无法找到合适的演讲材料。无话可说让他心里越发紧张，说起话来就越发显得笨拙和结巴。随着时间的一分一秒地过去。他越发地尴尬了，后来都不知该说什么了。他一边不停地对听众说“对不起”，一边还想从笔记中理出一点头绪来。为了缓解尴尬，他用颤抖的手端起一杯水，凑到干燥的唇边。当时的情景真是惨不忍睹。最后，他只好坐了下来，而留给大家的是一个最丢脸的演讲家的效果。
这位政府官员的演讲水平和他的地位太不相称了。他的讲演方式正印证了卢梭说的书写情书的方式：始于不知何所云，止于不知已所云。
名人对演讲有过很多我们要记住的论断。林肯曾说：“即使年纪一大把，经验一大堆，如果无话可说，也免不了要为此难为情。丹尼尔?韦伯德也说：“如果没有准备就出现在听众面前，这和裸体没什么两样。”如果你想培养自信，就去做好那些在你的演讲时能给你安全感的事，这恰如司徒?乔说的：“完全的爱，会置恐惧于度外。”
这些人的话可能说明一个主题：演说之前要准备。在这方面我还要补充的是，所谓的准备，不是让你逐字逐句地把演讲稿背诵下来。或许有的演讲者不这样认为。
把演讲稿背诵下来，可能是为了避免演讲时大脑一片空白，但事实的教训是让人一头栽进忘记的陷阱里。如果有人坚持背诵讲稿，不仅会花费很多精力和时间，而且还会毁掉整个演讲。
