“不会收拾的女人”与“不收拾的男人”
正在阅读本书的各位女性朋友，你是不是觉得自己是个没用的、不懂收拾的女人呢？
产生这种想法的其中一个原因是某些书在市面横行，比如Sari Solden的《Women with Attention Deficit Disorder》，日文版的书名叫做《不会收拾的女人》。它们无一例外，都把收拾看做是一种能力。
这或许是一个能够让我们有所自觉的绝佳契机，但要是有人因此把不会收拾看成是一种无能或缺陷，认定自己“就是个缺乏收拾能力的没用的女人”，或是觉得“没办法，我一定是有ADD（注意力缺失症）”，那就太遗憾了（不过实际上，的确也有一些人需要求助于医师进行必要的咨询）。因为无论如何，这其实都是在自责。
男人又怎么样呢？我们好像很少听到“不会收拾的男人”这种说法，而是会用“不收拾的男人”来形容。为什么会有这样的差别呢？这也就是说，女人会将不会收拾看成是一种能力的缺乏而自责，而男人则是将杂乱不堪视为一种状况，对杂乱的状况本身忧虑不已。
这就显示出一种根深蒂固的成见——说穿了，收拾只不过是家务事，是女人的事。既然是家务事，那么会做就是理所当然的。这种观念长久以来一直紧紧束缚着女人，所以女人才会自责，所以才会引致这样的恶性循环。
至于男人，他们则是把杂乱视为状况。从某种意义上来说，这或许也是出于上述的观念。男人从心底就认定收拾是女人的工作，所以绝对不会因为家庭环境杂乱不堪而责怪自己。
如果你正好是一位认定自己是没用的、不懂收拾的女人，并且正在为此而自责，何不假设自己是男人，不带任何个人情绪地去看“眼前是一片没有收拾的杂乱状况”、“我为什么要把收拾当成是一种能力呢”，稍微以俯瞰的观点去看，自然而然就能避免感情用事了。
总之，不要带着负面情绪，不要自责，这是非常重要的。把收拾当成是一种能力——干脆先直接把这件事给断舍离了吧！
《断舍离》中明确地将“收拾”定义为“筛选必要物品的工作”，与单纯的整理或扫除不同。总之，“减少物品=舍的行为”是最关键的行动。如果物品不减少，也就别奢望彻底整理或扫除了。
不过，物品减少并不等于大功告成。在《断舍离》里，我提出了七、五、一总量限制原则，以此作为打造清爽自在空间的指标，但最重要的是要把空间里物品的总量减少到能让住在里面的我们觉得舒适的程度。这也就是说，要重新检讨放在家里的物品与我们的关系，取回那些被物品夺走的空间和能量。
如果是一直过着那种对物品的量没有意识、毫无自觉的生活，那么家里的物品就会不断地增加再增加，所体现出的形式在男女之间会有所差异。大部分男人都是断舍离“三种扔不掉东西的人”当中的“执著过去型”。换句话说，就是收藏家个性，像是把从刚出社会到退休所有领带都摆进衣柜里、毫无缘由地收集各种文学集，小时候喜欢的卡通模型玩具也都留着……这些东西经常被当成宝贝一样收藏着，而当事人却从来没想过检讨物品与现在的自己之间的关系。
在这种情况下，首先必须要清楚分辨出当事人是喜欢物品本身，还是仅仅喜欢“收集”这个行为。如果是前者，无论物品有多少，都可以说是良好的关系。至于后者，则是自我存在感的证明。男人往往会通过物品来彰显自己的存在感，也就是通过物品向人们展示“我过去立下过这么多的丰功伟绩”、“我能弄到这些个宝贝，多厉害”。
曾经有位读者对我说：“丈夫退休以后，我想把他的西装扔了，结果被他大骂一顿：‘你要不要连我一起扔出去呢？’”这些物品对男人来说，是与自己连为一体、难以割舍的存在。每个人都有希望得到外界认同的“认同欲望”，男人尤其更爱把社会对他的认同和评价视为自己独特性的证明，所以他们才喜欢把某些物品当成是自己存在、获得认同的证据留存下来。
在这种时候，做妻子的该怎么做呢？断舍离的大前提是不可以擅自处置同住的家人的物品，所以如果希望丈夫收拾时，不妨这么说：
“你的品位这么棒，所以才更要精挑细选呀。”
千万不能说的是“赶紧拿去扔了”，这种会重创男人自尊心的话，会造成反效果。可能有人要抗议了：“这么肉麻的话，我怎么说得出口啊？丢死人了！”但如何巧妙地表达出来，得到自己想要的结果，就要看个人的本领了。因为无论怎么说，妻子的肯定可都是能令男人喜不自胜的。
