卡尔·威特是19世纪德国的一个知名的天才，出生于1800年。卡尔八九岁时，已经能够自由运用德语、法语、意大利语、拉丁语、英语和希腊语六种语言，并且通晓动物学、植物学、物理学、化学，尤其是擅长数学。9岁那年，考中莱比锡大学。1814年4月，未满14岁的卡尔由于数学论文而被授予哲学博士学位。两年以后，又于16岁时获得了法学博士学位，并被任命为柏林大学的法学教授，还未上任，便接受了普鲁士国王的赏金去意大利留学。卡尔·威特一生都在德国的知名大学里讲学，在有口皆碑的赞扬声中一直讲到1883年逝世为止。

我绝不剥夺儿子玩的权利
通过对儿子的教育，我发现玩对于孩子来说不仅仅是兴趣，更重要的是在玩之中可以逐步开发孩子的智力。
父母总是把孩子玩泥巴、玩水、玩沙、玩石子看成是一种没出息、没教养的行为，认为这样的孩子成不了大器。这是一种错误的观念。孩子与成人不同，不可能像大人那样坐在那儿静静地思考问题，孩子必须在玩的过程中通过触摸事物，实际的摆弄和操作来认识世界。对孩子来说，周围的一切环境都是学习的对象，他们往往在各种活动中发展起他们的智力。
只要有空，我就带儿子去参观所有的博物馆、美术馆、动物园、植物园、工厂、矿山、医院、保育院等，以开阔他的眼界，增加他的见识。在参观前，儿子都要先阅读大量有关的书籍，有一个大体的了解，然后再通过自己的眼睛实地接触这些事物，获得了大量与直接感知相一致的信息与知识。在这时，儿子的脑子总是转动得特别快，心里充满着寻根究底的疑问。面对儿子源源不断的问题，我总是尽我所能给他说明和解释，并做到深入浅出，决不随便敷衍。因为我知道，这样教授知识最自然而且有效。
只要能满足儿子的求知欲望和追求真理的精神，我决不吝惜体力和金钱；为了向儿子公开魔术的秘密，我就曾不惜重金，请魔术师现身说法。类似这样的事情还非常多。儿子生长在内陆地区，但他总在书中看到对大海、大洋的描述。他很喜欢看这一类的书，在看了麦哲伦、哥伦布等航海家的传记以及《马可·波罗游记》这些书以后，他非常想去看看大海。于是，我就带他去了地中海海岸。平生第一次看到大海，儿子兴奋极了。我们在那里拾贝壳，采集海藻，拾水母、海星等。我对他讲述了这些海产品以及海底生物的各种知识，他对神奇的海底世界十分向往。我们又在沙滩上做各种游戏，比如堆山、凿河、开湖、垒岬、修湾、筑岛、封岛等。要使孩子形成地理概念，海边真是最有利的地方。我把地球仪带到海边，告诉他地中海就在这里，越过地中海就能到达非洲，非洲大陆的两边是太平洋和大西洋，越过太平洋就可以像马可·波罗那样到达中国，而越过大西洋就可以像哥伦布那样到达美洲。就这样，儿子逐步了解了地球的概念，学会了世界地理。
光参观还只是这类教育的一部分。每次参观归来，我还让儿子详细叙述见到过的一切，或者让他向母亲汇报。由于有这一功课要完成，使儿子在参观中总是用心观察，认真听取我或者导游的介绍与讲解。这样一来，效果就更为显著，儿子能记住更多的东西。
儿子3岁以后，我不再局限于哈勒地方，开始领着他到各方周游。5岁时，儿子就已经在我的陪伴下，几乎周游了德国的所有大城市。在旅途中，我们既登山，也去游览名胜；既去寻找古迹，也去凭吊古战场，还参观了无数的古堡、宫殿、园林、教堂。回到旅馆后，我就让儿子把看到的一切写信告知他的母亲和熟人。回到家中，他还要向亲人们口头讲解旅途见闻和切身体会。6岁时，儿子已经成了洛赫附近最见多识广的孩子了。他的见识甚至超过很多大人。人们在地理、历史方面有什么想知道的都去问他，或者想听听其他地方的奇闻逸事的，也会来找卡尔。后来，儿子干脆写了一本游记，将自己旅途中的所见所闻全部写了下来，大家都看得津津有味。
儿子的丰富的知识得益于他在玩的过程中通过接触实际环境的切身体会。通过各种玩乐，儿子不仅熟悉地掌握了各种常识，也培养了不同于一般孩子的生活情趣。我从来不想把儿子培养成所谓的学者，他们只懂得自己的一点专业，为了显示他们有高人一等的学识，不论对谁，走到哪里，总是一味卖弄他的专业，不管人家是否愿意。对于专业以外的东西，他们一概不知，也毫无兴趣。比如，他们非常缺乏常识，就像一些不食人间烟火的人。他们对时事等问题发表的拙劣看法，时常成为人们的笑柄。
带有偏见的人们认为我儿子除了坐在书桌前面，其他什么也不干。他们甚至认为，他可能除了学究式的知识外，还会点外语，其他就一概不懂了。但是了解我儿子的人都知道，他坐在书桌前的时间比任何一个少年都少。事实上，他把大量的时间尽情地花费在了玩耍和运动上，是一个非常健康活泼的孩子。
