心爱的约翰：
你很希望我一直陪伴在你的左右，如果可以，我也想那样做，但试问能够一辈子陪伴在子女身边的父母有多少。所以，我还是希望你能够独立，运用自己的双腿走出精彩的人生，即使沿路没有我。
或许你会说你还没有准备好一个人面对生活的挑战，但我希望你能够理性一点，自信一点，因为你将要站在一个比普通人高的起点出发，当中的困难我不是不知道，但能否爬上一个更高地方，这完全由你自己决定，没有人能够为你做点什么。
你现在所处的高度本来已经不是常人能够抵达的，所以必须步步为营，小心谨慎，这样才能向更高的地方走去，这也是我把你留在身边的原因。
但我希望你不要因为拥有的物质条件比别人优厚就自负、自满，你不过是美国的一名普通公民，因为父母的庇荫让你能够站在高处出发，节省了不少劳力和心力，但这不是你的劳动成果，仅仅是因为你的出身让你拥有了站在高处的特权，一旦你不小心、不谨慎，那么你就会从高处跌下，轻则骨裂，重则体无完肤。所以，你一定要谨记不能妄自菲薄，让自己停滞不前甚至倒退，必须要珍惜这样一个起点，用自己最真实的力量，让自己爬得更高。
你也知道我是白手起家的，刚踏进社会我不过是一个月薪20美元的记账员，可以说没有什么特别之处，但我从来也不会灰心丧气，因为上天给予我健康的身体，发达的四肢，让我不断地通过自己的努力和智慧去获得想要的财富，最后组建了每个人都羡慕的石油王国，当然也离不开别人对我的帮助，但总的来说，如果我自己不努力，不坚持不懈地去追逐目标，成功也会和我擦肩而过。

我从来不会在你和姐姐们面前表现得十分富有，因为我希望你们知道，父母富有不过是因为父母自己努力得出的成果，而不是你们的功劳。我不希望你们因为我的财富而变得自负、自满，甚至觉得很多事情都理所当然。你要谨记一点，在这个世上，除了你自己，没有人有义务去保证你的生活，你必须要学会运用自己的双手去创造和保障自己的生活，这也是人生最重要的课题。
