画面上，映入眼帘的首先是窗外耀眼的阳光。金黄色的冬日阳光尽管明亮，却丝毫不能给人温暖的感觉。我们注意到有位老者一动不动地坐在窗前。他的视线并不在书桌和研读的书上，那么他在做什么呢？沉思、小憩、抑或冥想？接着，我们的注意力转向画面的右侧，那里有地窖入口——一扇低矮的门，继而又被螺旋楼梯所吸引。当我们的目光正准备拾级而上时，突然又会发现在一旁的炉膛里哔啵作响的炭火，有个女人正在将其拨旺。最后，我们会情不自禁地随楼梯蜿蜒前行，最终被引入一片漆黑之中。
画面很小，展现的环境很昏暗，但细看后却让人感觉自己面对着一个广阔的空间。这就是伦勃朗的天才所在，他总能让我们的视线在迥异的层次间游移。横着看，左边有强烈的阳光，右边则是微弱得几乎不值一提的炉火。照亮世界却毫无温暖的阳光与温暖世界但光芒黯淡的炉火之间的对话，理性的阳光与激情的炉火之间的反差，这难道不正是辩证哲学的形象体现吗？画面上端，螺旋楼梯将地窖神秘莫测的深度和顶楼扑朔迷离的昏暗连接了起来。画面底部，深色背景与环绕哲学家的晦暗阴影交融在一起。一种空间感通过画家这种“若隐若现”的巧妙手法展现了出来。重要的是，我们会想象：窗子外面是什么？地窖门后面隐藏着什么？顶楼上又有什么？重要的还有那些我们的肉眼看不到却转瞬即逝的东西，比如哲学家的精神生活，即他的内心世界。黑暗，半明半暗，些许光亮，一丝温暖，一个游走的灵魂。这是否与我们的内心世界有几分相似？
