我们的理想不仅仅是泛泛地解释历史，更希望能够数量化地、有预测性地研究历史。这样我们就可以利用历史资料，帮助我们做现代的大的决策，避免错误的发展方向，带来更幸福美好的未来。
我看过国外的一个研究，他们把第二次世界大战前的各种政治、经济、文化、传统等资料数量化之后，建立了一个模型，用这个模型去运算，看各个国家可能的结盟情况如何。根据运算，得出的结果是，虽然各国之间怎么结盟都不是完全不可能，但是可能性最大的结盟方式有两种：一种是德国和日本、意大利结盟，苏联和英、美、法等国结盟，这是可能性最大的一种；另外还有一种可能性稍逊于这一种，但是也不小。最后，历史选择了可能性最大的一种。但是，当时如果有特殊的事件发生，其实另一种可能性稍逊的结盟方式也是可以实现的。如果是那样，历史就会和现在实际发生的不同了。
这样的研究代表了未来的方向，它体现了历史的必然性的一面，也体现了历史偶然性的一面，更主要的是，它是有精确的数据作为根据的，而不是仅仅凭着研究者的直觉。如果我们借助实际历史资料，进一步修正完善这个模型，那么将来我们可以用这个模型运算，并知道当代我们有哪些可能性最大的“历史选择”，从而我们就有可能更理性地选择我们的未来。
这种可以用数据来证明的，关于历史和心理的研究假设，是更有价值的。它们可以引出非常数量化的，有一定预测性的结论。
本书中，有一些研究在一定程度上走向了这个方向。比如，用数量化的文本分析研究宋词中的“愁”，从而给出了关于宋代中国人的“愁”的情绪特点的一些结论，对我们了解中国人情绪特点很有帮助。比如，我们试图延续《潜规则》一书的思路，用运筹学或博弈论来研究中国历史中的现象。当然，我们这部分做得非常粗浅。而吴思先生的研究，也只是用博弈论的思路来理解了历史现象，而没有能够真正建立模型，用博弈论的数学运算，用历史中的真实数据，来得出更可靠的数量化的结论。这应该是未来心理历史学发展中的任务。
《春节起源考》用文字学考据的方法，来研究中国历史，也是一个很好的发展方向。
两篇“新增广贤文”的文字，是尝试用通俗化的心理学方法，来对历史上中国的价值观进行改造。《从民本主义到中国特色的民主》是我着力去写的文章，因为我认为这样的文章，对我们现实社会和未来的发展意义更大。
当然，需要研究、可以研究而我们现在还没有研究的主题也还很多。
比如我有个假说，我觉得很有可能成立，值得去做一些数量化的研究，那就是历史的二次重复。
马克思发现过这样的现象，一个重大历史事件发生后，往往会重复出现第二次很类似的事件。只不过这第二次往往“像闹剧”。
我的假设是，从人的心理规律上，一个人在童年和青少年时期所遇到的重要的人和事件，可能会潜移默化地影响到他。而当这个人到了中年的时候，当他对社会有影响力的时候，他可能会有意识或无意识地按照自己青少年时期看到的人那样做。从而使历史事件出现二次重复现象。
比如，有许多企业家模仿国家领导人，有人甚至在会议室挂上“军事地图”，用领袖指挥作战的样子去处理企业事务。这都是历史的二次重复的表现。
再比如，20世纪我们提倡过“土法上马”，也就是研究有什么取巧的方法，可以让我们更快地获得更多产品。这个做法，在心理上给了人们一种暗示，那就是我们也许可以有取巧的方式，能“超越性”地获得成功。
几十年后，人们把这些思路用在了“造假”上，可以土法上马做出很多以假乱真的物品来。正如几十年前，我们用“土高炉”炼钢一样，我们现在也会用三聚氰胺来做奶粉。
这也是一种历史的二次重复现象。
根据我们的假说，历史的二次重复现象，时间上是有一定限制的。童年和青少年时受到了某种影响的人，在他青年时期一般不会去重复历史，因为那时他还没有能力和影响力，也还没有完全进入社会；在他老年期一般也不会去重复历史（除非他是老了还施加影响的那些政治家），因为他可能已经退出社会了。所以，多数历史的二次重复现象，历史事件的第一次和第二次之间的时间间隔应该是30年左右。
这类有趣的假说，都等着我们研究。只是我们不能等待一切都研究完了再出书。我们希望这本书可以激发别人做类似的研究，更快地发展心理历史学这个学科，当然我们自己也将继续研究下去。
