古人所说的“人心”，是指多数人的共同心理。比如说“人心思定”，是指多数人都厌倦了战争，渴望和平。不容置疑，“人心”对历史的发展影响很大。无论你是什么盖世英雄，如果你和人心作对，多数时候也是自取灭亡。当然我们必须承认也有例外，个别暴君之流因为掌握了巨大的权力，也可以不顾人心一意孤行，而且未必都会马上灭亡。不过，他们这样做也会大大削弱自己的统治基础，而使得他们的王朝走的离悬崖越来越近。
了解“人心”是如何的，也就因此能让我们更清楚历史。
举一个小例子：在中国人心目中，诸葛亮是一个智慧超凡的人物。历史上真实的诸葛亮，虽然并没有大家认为的那样神通广大，但是也还是一个出色的人物。从他治理蜀国，能够井井有条，可以看出他的确是有才华的。但是，他六出岐山，却无功而返。至少有一个因素是和“人心”有关：那就是在天下三分的局面已定之后，蜀国的老百姓安居乐业，并没有愿望去“一统天下”。诸葛亮固然有自己的价值观和人生理想，但是这并不是蜀国老百姓“人心”中的理想。天下一统于汉，或者不一统于汉，对蜀国老百姓并没有什么意义。因此，诸葛亮六出岐山应该是不会得蜀国的人心的。因而，即使他侥幸获得了局部的胜利，蜀国的将士也很难继续追随他战斗到灭掉魏国为止。
还有一点，就是在诸葛亮六出岐山的时候，汉献帝早已被废多年了，或者说正宗的汉朝已经灭亡了多年了。人们对汉朝的情感，也早已淡化，感情上对汉朝的忠诚也已大为淡化。这样，天下统一于汉，对于全天下的百姓的人心来说，也没有什么意义。
“人心”的向背，影响因素很多。有些影响因素是经济的，比如轻徭役，薄赋税的政府总是更得人心；但是有些是更精神层面的，或者说是心理层面的。各种因素影响下最后形成的人心状态会是如何，是一个很复杂的各种因素相互作用的结果。这个结果未必一定合乎理性，也未必一定合乎大家的利益。
当然，如果要更细致一点地分析，我们不能满足于分析某个历史时期中全体人的“人心”，还应该细分出各个具体的群体，并分析这个群体的心理。这样分出的群体可以是实际的某个组织，比如义和团就很值得做心理分析；也可以是一个社会阶层，比如“寒族”；还可以是一个民族，比如清代时的入关满族人，或者苻坚手下的鲜卑族将领等等。分析这些特别的群体的特别的心理，对我们理解许多历史事件会有很大的帮助。本书中有一篇关于魏晋南北朝时期士族的心理研究的小文，也很是浅近，不过也可以作为一块引玉之砖。
