（二）局限性
儿童行为观察与研究有许多优点，但是，任何方法都不是唯一的，也不是完美的，儿童行为观察与研究法也有许多不足，了解这些不足，在具体的观察活动中扬长避短，才能使观察的结果更加理想。其局限性体现在以下六个方面。
1.难以深入到事物的内部
由于儿童行为观察与研究主要是借助于人的感觉器官进行的，运用人的感觉器官进行观察时，观察的深度和范围是有一定限度的，超过了这个限度，就会看不到、听不到……感受不到，使观察更深刻的活动受到影响，而使人们常常只能凭借感觉器官对客观事物的表面现象做出大致的、粗浅的认识和描述，难以深入到事物的内部，无法揭示事物的本质特点。如对刚人园孩子早晨人园哭闹行为的观察，到底儿童的哭闹行为是由于对陌生环境的恐惧、对父母的依恋、对幼儿教师的不接纳抑或是对小朋友的反感等原因，难以从表面的观察中获得结论。
2.准确性难以把握
由于儿童行为观察与研究是在观察者直接操纵下进行的，而观察者本身知识面占有的广度、对该观察活动认识的程度、在观察过程中驾驭观察活动能力水平的高低以及不同的观察者掌握观察活动标准的差异、记录观察过程中问题的不同方法、分析问题的不同角度等等，都会直接给儿童行为观察与研究的结论打上一层主观的色彩，从而直接影响到观察最后的效果。
3.观察的过程难以控制
由于研究活动是在自然状态下对儿童行为进行的观察，而儿童的许多行为是无法进行直接控制和约束的，常常会有很多意想不到的情况出现，这就可能给观察过程带来很多意想不到的麻烦，可能使观察的活动无法正常进行或不能取得预期的观察效果，如对儿童上午和下午注意力持久性的观察，有可能会因为意外人员的闯入或意外情形的出现而使观察活动出现失败。
4.观察的结果难以统计
由于儿童的行为有较大的差异性和个别性，行为与行为之间的相似性较差，因此观察结果所获得的数据的差异性也较大，不利于进行统计和分析，同时结果的处理也不会像实验法那样有一个固定的常模和标准，使观察者能够按照说明获得一定的结论。
