Author Description

卡伦·霍尼，德裔犹太美国人，20世界重要的精神分析思想家之一，与弗洛姆同为新弗洛伊德主义的主要代表人物。霍妮是社会心理学的较早的倡导者之一，主张以文化决定论替代弗洛伊德的生物决定论，是精神分析学说的发展中举足轻重的人物。著有《精神分析新法》、《我们时代的神经症人格》、《自我分析》、《我们内心的冲突》和《神经症与人的成长》等。

王作虹，翻译家，教授，原成都大学教学名师、美国西雅图埃德蒙兹学院交换学者，曾赴海湾为中国建筑总公司担任项目首席口译。在三联书店、译林出版社、台湾远流出版社、商务印书馆、北京知识出版社等出版学术译著十余部。

首先我要申明：有冲突并非就是患了神经症。生活中总有我们的兴趣、信念与周围的人发生冲撞的时刻。所以，正像在我们与环境之间经常发生这类冲突一样，我们内心的冲突也是生命不可缺少的组成部分。
动物的行为主要取决于本能。它们的交配、育雏、觅食、防卫等都是在不向程度上被决定了的，不以个体的意志为转移。反，人类能够作出选择，也必须作出选择。这既是人的特权，也是他的重负。我们也许必须在两种相反的欲望之间决定取舍。比如，我们想一人独处，又想有人作伴；我们既要想学医又想学音乐。或者，在我们的意愿与义务之间有冲突。例如，有人陷入困难正需要我们的帮助，我们却渴望与情人幽会；我们也许左右为难，既想赞同别人，又想反对他们：最后，我们也许动摇于两个价值观念之间。比如，战争期间我们相信冒险出征是义务，但也认为留下来照看亲人是责任。
这类冲突的种类、范围、强度主要决定于我们生活于其中的文明。如果文明保持稳定，坚守传统，可能出现的选择种类则是有限的，个体可能发生的冲突也不会太多。但即使是这样，冲突也并没有消失。
