欧文·亚隆主张人是自由的，要为自己的选择及行动负责，所以他认为，在团体心理治疗过程中，与当事人探索的主题应包括自我觉察能力、自由与责任、自我认同与人际关系、生命的意义等。

欧文·亚隆，斯坦福大学医学院精神病学教授、美国团体心理治疗专业、当代精神病学大师，与维克多·弗兰克和罗洛·梅并称存在主义治疗的三大代表人物，曾被授予1974年的爱德华·史崔克奖和1979年的美国精神病学协会奖励基金。作为当今世界上很著名、著作流传很广、有影响力的心理治疗大师之一，欧文·亚隆不仅出版了启发无数心理治疗师的经典教科书《团体心理治疗》《存在主义心理治疗》，也创作了深受普通读者喜爱的《当尼采哭泣》《爱情刽子手》《叔本华的治疗》《诊疗椅上的谎言》等心理学通俗读物。
