第一章大脑因人而异

如果你相信大多数自助书籍、通俗心理学文章和电视理疗师讲的那一套，你也许会以为人们对生活中的重大事件的反应是很容易预测的。“专家”会告诉你，同样的事情对我们大多数人都会产生类似的影响：每个人都会经历同样的悲伤过程；当我们坠人情网时，发生的事情会遵循一个既定的顺序：当我们被另一半甩掉，当我们初为人父母，当我们职场失意，当工作量让我们不堪重负，当正值青春期的子女让我们头痛，以及当我们面对衰老带来的变化时，几乎每个正常人都会有某种标准的反应。就是这些专家自信满满地向我们每个人推荐一些心理自助法，据称，这些办法可以帮助我们恢复情绪，坦然面对生活中的挫折或者情场的失意，对一些事情变得更敏感（或者更不敏感），摆脱焦虑以保持淡定……要不就能变成那些我们希望成为的人。

背景类似的两个人，可能会对同样的生活事件做出完全不同的反应．这在我作为一名神经科学家的职业生涯里，已见过数干例。比如，在面对压力的时候，有些人可以很好地调整自己的情绪，另一些人则会崩溃。后一种人在面对逆境的时候，会变得焦虑、抑郁，他们的工作和生活因此会受到严重的影响。而情绪调整能力强的人不但能够很好地面对压力，甚至还可以从一些压力情境中受益，化逆境为优势。简言之，这个现象正是我的研究动力。我希望了解是什么决定了人们对婚姻破裂、亲人故去、失业等挫折的反应。当然，我同样感兴趣的是，在职场得意、赢得真爱、获悉朋友会为自己赴汤蹈火，以及遇到其他令人高兴的事情时，人们的反应是由什么因素造成的。面对生活中的起起落落，人们会有哪些不同的情绪反应？为什么会这样？

我的研究针对这个问题给出的答案是，不同的人有不同的情绪风格。所谓情绪风格是指情绪反应在类型、强度和持续时间上的差异。正如每个人都有独一无二的指纹和独一无二的面孔，我们每个人都有独一无二的情绪风格特征。关于我们是谁，情绪风格特征提供了丰富的信息，熟悉我们的人往往可以预测，我们对某种情绪上的挑战会做出何种回应。
