《儿童教育心理学》：
需要特别强调的是，在这种情况下，当一个孩子的行为变坏，或开始出现某些新的令人不快的迹象时，我们不仅要考虑到这种状况开始出现的时间，而且要考虑到引起这种状况的原因。在使用“原因”这个词时我们必须小心，因为人们往往无法理解，为什么妹妹的出生会成为哥哥变成问题儿童的原因。但是，这种情况时常发生，而且我们决不能把这种关系视为这个孩子所采取的一种错误的态度。这并不是一个严格的物理一科学意义上的因果关系问题，因为，我们决不能认为，由于一个小妹妹的出生，哥哥的行为就一定会变坏。我们可以说，当一块石头向地面坠落时，它必定会朝某种方向并以某种速度向下坠落。但是，个体心理学所做的调查研究使我们有权利宣称，在心理的“坠落”中，严格的因果关系根本不起作用——只不过那些大大小小的错误产生之后，就会对个体未来的发展产生影响。
人的心理发展中会出现错误，而且这些错误及其后果都会有密切关联，会在某种失败或错误的倾向中表现出来，这丝毫不足为奇。所有这一切都归咎于心理的目标设定活动，而且这种目标设定包含着判断——也就是说，判断本身就有可能让人犯错误。目标的设定或确定在童年早期就已经开始了。一般地说，儿童到2～3岁的时候，就开始为自己设定一个优越的目标，这个目标总是在前面指导着他，他以自己的方式奋力以求地想要达到这个目标。目标的确定通常包含一些不正确的判断。然而，目标的确定或多或少也会对儿童产生约束。儿童会以具体的方式来追求目标的实现，安排其全部的生活，这就成为对这个目标的一种永恒的追求。
