Author Description

埃里希·弗洛姆（1900~1980），著名德裔美籍心理学家、精神分析学家、哲学家。1900年生于德国法兰克福犹太人家庭，1922年获德国海德堡大学哲学博士学位，是“法兰克福学派”的重要成员。纳粹上台后，他于1934年赴美，在从事心理咨询工作的同时，于哥伦比亚大学等学术机构讲学，井先后执教于墨西哥国立大学、密歇根州立大学等高校。1980年，弗洛姆病逝于瑞士洛伽诺。弗洛姆的研究植根于弗洛伊德的精神分析学说和马克思主义哲学理论。他以深入浅出、平易近人的文笔，创作了大量学术著作和普及性作品，包括：《人类的破坏性剖析》《占有还是存在》《人心：善恶天性》等。

第三章弗洛伊德和女人的关系：爱
弗洛伊德和妻子的关系也表现出他对母亲形象的依赖，这一点不会令人感到奇怪。弗洛伊德与妻子的关系的最突出特点是，他在婚前和婚后的态度相去甚远。在他订婚后的几年中，弗洛伊德是一个狂热、多情并且非常嫉妒的情人。下面这一段是从他给玛莎（Martha）的信中（1884年6月2日）所摘录的话，很有特色地表达了他那种炽热的爱。“我的公主，我的到来就是你的不幸。我将吻得你满脸通红，把你喂得丰满起来。到那时，你就会看到谁是强者，是不吃饱饭的温顺小姑娘，还是躯体中含有可卡因的高大疯狂的男人”。[1]
“谁是强者”的玩笑含有非常严肃的暗示。订婚之后，弗洛伊德有着强烈的愿望，一心想完全控制玛莎，这种愿望自然也包含强烈的嫉妒，除了自己之外，他对玛莎可能感兴趣和有感情的任何人都心怀怨恨。例如，玛莎的一个表兄，麦克斯·梅耶尔（Max Mayer），曾经是她第一个偏爱的人。“有一段时间，弗洛伊德不准玛莎称呼他为‘麦克斯’，只能叫他‘梅耶尔先生’”[2]。弗洛伊德还谈及另一个曾和玛莎恋爱过的年轻人，他写道：“当我回想起你给弗利泽的信和我们在卡伦堡（Kahlenberg）的日子，我就完全无法控制自己，如果我有力量摧毁整个世界，包括你我在内，让一切重新开始——即便是冒着不再有玛莎和我自己的危险——我也将毫不犹豫地这样做。”[3]
但是，弗洛伊德的嫉妒决不仅限于其他青年男子，它同样施于玛莎对她家庭的深厚感情。他要求玛莎，“她不应该只是简单地对她母亲和她哥哥进行客现的批评，抛弃对他们的一切‘愚蠢的迷信’，而且她还必须收回对他们的一切感情——这是因为他们是他的敌人，她应该和他一起憎恨他们”。[4]
在弗洛伊德对玛莎的哥哥埃利（Eli）的态度中，我们可以发现同样的情绪。玛莎曾把一笔钱委托给埃利保管，她和未婚夫要用它购买公寓的家具。埃利似乎用这笔钱做了投资，他没有爽快地立刻如数归还，而是建议他们用分期付款的办法购置家具。弗洛伊德对此的反应是向玛莎提出最后通牒，首先让她必须给埃利写封信，以示愤怒，还要把他叫做“恶棍”。甚至在埃利还了钱之后，弗洛伊德还要求玛莎“答应断绝了和埃利的一切关系之后，再给他（弗洛伊德）写信。”[5]
“男子有控制妻子生活的自然权利”这一假设，是弗洛伊德男子优势理论的部分观点。这种看法的典型例子是他对约翰·穆勒（John Stuart Mill）的批评。弗洛伊德赞扬穆勒，说他“也许是本世纪最善于使自己摆脱习惯偏见之束缚的人。另一方面……他在许多问题上缺乏荒谬感”[6]。那么，穆勒思想中有什么“荒谬”之处呢？按照弗洛伊德的看法，那就是他关于“妇女解放以及……全部妇女问题的观点”。穆勒认为，已婚妇女能够挣得和丈夫一样多的钱，弗洛伊德因此说：
穆勒的这个观点简直没有人性……让妇女完全像男人一样为生存而斗争，确实是个流产的思想。譬如，如果我把我温柔可爱的姑娘想象为一个竞争者，结果只能像我十七个月前所做的那样，告诉她我爱她，恳求她离开竞争，回到家庭里平静、无争的活动中……我相信，法律和教育的一切改革，都会在这个事实面前败北，即远在一个男人达到赢得一定社会地位的年龄之前，女人天然具有的漂亮、魅力和温柔，就已决定了她的命运。法律和习俗的确有许多东西要灌输给不懂得它们的女人，但是，女人的地位确实将是如此，年轻时是个受人敬慕的心上人，成年后是个受人挚爱的妻子。[7]
弗洛伊德关于妇女解放的观点，与欧洲19世纪80年代普通人的观点确实没有什么区别。但是，弗洛伊德不是一个普通人，他起来反对他那个时代一些根深蒂固的偏见，然而在这一方面，他却因袭关于妇女问题的最合传统的看法，把穆勒斥责为“荒谬”“没有人性”，而穆勒的观点不到五十年就被人们普遍接受了。弗洛伊德的态度确实表明，他力图把妇女置于低劣地位的要求是何等强烈，何等逼人。他的理论观点对这种态度的反映是十分明显的。把妇女看成被阉割的男人，认为她们自己没有真正的性行为，总是嫉妒男人，她们没能充分地发展超我，十分讲求虚荣，不可信赖。所有这些，只不过是他那个时代父权制的偏见在理论上的翻版。像弗洛伊德这样一个有能力洞察和批判传统偏见的人，必定受他内在的强大力量所支配，才会对这些所谓科学陈述的文饰特征视而不见。[8]
五十年后，弗洛伊德仍旧坚持同样的见解。当他批评美国文化具有“母权制”特征时，来看望他的学生沃思（Wofthis）博士问他：“难道你不认为双方平等是最好的吗?”弗洛伊德答道：“这实际上根本不可能。必定存在着不平等，两害相权，还是男人优越些好。”[9]
如果说，弗洛伊德订婚后结婚前的日子里充满了热烈的追求和强烈的嫉妒，那么，他的婚后生活似乎非常缺乏主动的爱和热情。像许多传统的婚姻一样，征服女人是令人激动的，但一旦征服了她，热烈的爱情也就丧失了丰富的来源。男子的自豪在于求婚，结婚之后，自豪感也就得不到进一步的满足了。处于这种婚姻中的妻子只有一个职能：母亲的职能。她必须无条件地献身于丈夫，关心他的物质财富，永远服从他的需要和愿望，她自己永远是一个一无所求的女人，一个伺奉别人的女人——也即是说，必须是母亲。婚前，弗洛伊德陷入热烈的爱情——因为他必须征服他所选择的姑娘，以证明自己的男子气概。征服一旦由结婚所证实，“可爱的心上人”就变成强烈地爱着的母亲，尽可以依赖她的照顾和爱，对她则无须给予主动的、热烈的爱。

“凡人”弗洛伊德
恐怕没有人会否认，精神分析是弗洛伊德对人类的一大贡献。确实，它每日每时都造福于人类：仅在世界各地的精神病诊所，就有成千上万的人接受精神分析，使得掩避他们的精神障碍被逐步袪除，他们心灵的秘密被清晰地揭示出来。但是，十分滑稽的是，弗洛伊德本人却因为创立精神分析而被弄得暧昧不明，面目全非了。一方面，他被奉为偶像，受到顶礼膜拜；另一方面，他又被斥为招摇过市的骗子、伪科学家、色情狂。在这争吵不休的喧闹声中，人们无法客观地辨认弗洛伊德的个性特征，也不能正确地评价精神分析学说。看来，必须对这位精神分析大师本人进行一次精神分析。弗洛姆的这本小书，正是在这方面做出的努力。
埃里希·弗洛姆不仅是著名的心理学家、社会哲学家，而且也是一位技术娴熟的精神分析医师。在这本书里，他运用精神分析的方法，对弗洛伊德大量的传记材料进行考证、鉴别和分析，分析结果表明，弗洛伊德是一个伟大的理性主义者。他相信理性，热望真理，为了理性和真理，他可以牺牲一切。
弗洛伊德怀有远大的抱负。在孩提时代，他就十分崇拜汉尼拔、拿破仑、摩西。在以后的生活中，他常常无意识地以他们自居。
弗洛伊德并非什么色情狂，也不是鼓吹纵欲无度的教唆犯。相反，他的私生活几乎无可挑剔，完全可以称之为维多利亚女王时代保守主义性道德的理想典范。他从来没有想过要利用某种理论去诲淫诲盗。
弗洛伊德也是一个凡人，在他的个性中杂有诸多弱点。弗洛伊德从小是母亲的宠儿，他深深地需要母亲的爱抚、赞许和保护。当他得到满足时，他充满信心，如果他失去这些，他会感到压抑和绝望。因此，他总有一种恐惧心理，带有强烈的依赖性。他过分的敏感、多疑。他自私，缺乏爱。在人们眼里，他是一个脾气古怪的人。
不过，如果以为弗洛姆的工作仅仅是给我们勾画一幅弗洛伊德的逼真肖像，那就错了，那就会忽略本书的主题。事实上，弗洛姆的意图正如本书标题所表明的，是要揭示弗洛伊德的神圣使命。勾勒肖像，不过是为了凸显弗洛伊德的使命感的由来。
弗洛姆认为，一旦了解了弗洛伊德的个性特征，我们和精神分析学说之间的隔膜就被揭开了，我们能够真切地体验到它的精髓。因为弗洛伊德的个性特征构成了其思想、行为的深刻动机，反映了隐藏在灵魂深处的内在世界。弗洛姆从他的分析中得出结论：通过阐释和发现人类现实的一个崭新方面——无意识，以启发和帮助人们用理性控制自己的非理性情感、意欲，实现理性，提高人类的文明，这就是弗洛伊德的使命。弗洛伊德企图以救世主拯救人类的理想来引领世界。他自比摩西，要给人类指出理性与和谐的希望之地，而他只能从远处眺望。他是人类的领路人，但是，他自己必然怀着深深的失望死去。弗洛伊德的使命，决定了他的精神分析不是纯粹的精神病诊疗技术或心理学说，而主要是一种体系庞大、立意新颖的人生哲学。它关心人、研究人、以人为目的。正是由于这种政治伦理的宗旨，精神分析才逐步形成一种运动。它不但在世界各地设置分会或分支机构，而且由秘密委员会领导。这是一种多么奇怪的现象，围绕一种科学理论，居然能够形成准政治、准宗教的运动！这一切只能用弗洛伊德的使命来解释。明白了这些，我们也就容易理解，弗洛伊德的精神分析学说为什么会迅速地渗入西方的政治、法律、文学、艺术等各个方面，溶于整个西方文化。
除了上述的要点以外，有一点还需指出：弗洛姆在本书主要运用精神分析的方法，这对中国读者来说还显得有点陌生。他运用这种方法巧妙地把分析弗洛伊德的个性特征与揭示他的使命紧密结合起来，表面上看似乎只是描述和分析弗洛伊德的一生，细细玩味却可体会到深刻的立意，味道无穷。
在本书的翻译过程中，译者参阅了弗洛伊德的一些原著和传记材料，并反复进行了校对和修改，但是，由于我们的水平有限，译文中难免有错误或不当之处，敬请读者指正。
