第一章神经症的文化与心理内涵

今天，“神经症”一词已被我们运用得十分随便，然而我们对它的实际含义却往往并没有一个清晰的概念。我们通常不过是用它来自炫博学地表示对某种行为的不赞成而已。如果我们过去习惯于说某人懒散、敏感、贪婪或多疑，那么我们现在很可能会径直说他是“神经症”。尽管我们并不知道这个词的确切含义，但在使用这个词的时候，我们还是意有所指的。我们不自觉地运用了某些标准来决定我们使用这个词的对象选择。

首先，神经症病人在其对待事物的反应上就显得与众不同。假如有这样一位姑娘，她甘居下游，不求上进，拒绝接受更多的薪金，也不希望与她的上司保持协调一致，我们很自然地会把她视为神经病。再例如这样一位艺术家，他每周只有三十块钱的收入，尽管只要他花更多的时间在工作上，就可以挣得更多的钱，但他却宁愿以这笔微薄的收入尽量地享受人生；他把大量时间花在与女人的厮混中，要不然就是沉溺在那些雕虫小技和无聊嗜好中。对这种人，我们也很自然地会称他们为神经病，其理由就在于我们大多数人仅仅熟悉一种生活方式。这种生活方式鼓励我们去征服世界，超越他人，获得远远超过生存基本需要的金钱。
