弗洛伊德与佛法认为欲望是人对人世痛苦现实的自然反应，一旦脱离欲望，我们就不再是自己。透过欲望，反而能帮助我们了解自我，面对生活的烦琐与生命的困顿。因此，本书以佛陀的“四圣谛”为架构，印度神话《罗摩衍那》为经纬，融会贯通弗洛伊德的精神分析学，并结合个案研究，提出各种实际建议，调和我们对欲望的矛盾观点，让我们对人类的欲望，有耳目一新的认识，进而通过欲望的驱力，达到身心灵的和谐与平静。

Book Abstract

1. 焦虑的反面不是宁静，而是欲望。

2. 与其说禅修减轻我的焦虑，不如说禅修让我焦虑更轮廓分明。它让我带着焦虑去正视那个让我感到困惑的世界，让我对世界理解得更全面。也许可以这样说，禅修带我看出焦虑的另一面是欲望。两者互相依赖，而非两不相干。

3. 欲望把人带离自己，带入人际关系之中，却也同时把人带入自己更深处。焦虑则将人带回自己，但只是回到那个已知的自己。

4. “分离”与“合一”其实并不是对立的，而是一体的两面，就像潮起和潮落。

5. 事实上，由欲望引入的不安全感，要比我们认定的舒服感更接近佛教所说的实相。

6. 就像世界各大宗教认定的，人如果完全臣服于欲望，后果将不堪设想。不过，又犹如修行欲望之道的人所发现的，欲望必然会带来的失望一样可以是有趣的。它能深化我们的内在生命，茁壮我们的灵性，照明事物的实相。

7. 规避孤单感终属徒劳，因为孤单感只是我们用来掩饰不安全感的面具。正如佛陀教导过的，最能体会何谓“无我”的时刻，莫过于最没有安全感的时刻。

8. 正如心理治疗师所发现的，人倾向于追逐满足，眷恋过去曾带给我们满足之物，而不是去学习怎样与欲望过程必然会产生的“分离”共处。药物、酒精、性、吃喝、购物、调情、色情刊物和赌博，全都是我们用来规避失望的方法，然而它们正是最粗糙的执着。在情绪的层次，执着一般都跟坚持对方要完全符合我们的期望有关。

9. 通过亲密关系我们认识到，愈把对方看成客体，失望的时候就愈多。但这不是坏事，因为善加利用，失望感便可以成为改变我们彼此对待方式的契机。由于无法找到百依百顺的客体，我们会慢慢认识到他人是有自主性的主体。不断遭受挫折可以让出离心生起。当我们接受了没有人可以满足我们一切需要的现实，就能以“如其所是”的眼光看待我们的伴侣，不是依我们想象的方式看他们。
