《咨询心理学》：
总之，只有建立了良好的咨询关系，才可能使咨询进入到深度探讨来访者的问题的阶段。
2.良好的咨询关系能够减少来访者的防御心理，使来访者能够在咨询过程中提供真实、全面的信息
咨询要想取得效果，咨询者必须对来访者的问题表现和形成原因等做出准确的评价和诊断，然后才可能设计出有针对性的咨询方案和计划。而咨询者做出准确评价和诊断的基础是来访者必须提供真实、全面的信息，尤其是与问题有关的信息。
然而，对于前来寻求帮助的来访者来说，他们来到的是一个陌生的环境，接触的是一个陌生的人。除了知道咨询者是从事心理咨询工作的人之外，他们对咨询者是一无所知，他们不知道咨询者是不是值得他们信任，是不是能够提供他们所需要的帮助。在这种情况下，当他们向咨询者提供有关信息的时候，多少都会有一些防御心理，更何况他们向咨询者提供的信息可能涉及他们个人，甚至家庭的面子与声誉。
在防御心理的作用下，来访者会尽量向咨询者“展示”他们好的一面，以求给咨询者留下“好”的印象；或者选择那些他们认为可以报告的信息，那些他们认为不会损坏他们个人或者家庭声誉的信息；或者即使报告有关问题，也会尽量弱化问题的严重程度，好像是在对咨询者说，“我（们）虽然有问题，但问题并不是你所想象的或者所说的那么严重”；或者当咨询者想与他们深入探讨某些问题的时候，会遇到他们的反抗。在这种情况下，咨询者要想做出准确的评价和诊断是比较困难的事情。而且，还有可能因为来访者提供不真实的信息，咨询者出现错误评价和诊断的情况，使咨询产生偏差。
来访者的防御心理，只有在良好咨询关系建立之后，只有在咨询者通过他们的“信任测试”之后才有可能逐渐解除。当来访者认为咨询者值得他们信任，可以为他们提供所需要的帮助之后，他们才会将真实的情况告诉咨询者。
3.良好的咨询关系能够促使来访者接受咨询者的建议，并积极配合咨询者
咨询要想取得效果，来访者必须实施咨询者的咨询建议和措施。再好的咨询建议和措施，如果来访者不遵照执行，也是不会取得任何效果的。而来访者对咨询者的咨询建议和措施的执行，是以来访者对咨询者的信任，承认并接纳咨询者的专家和权威身份为基础的。来访者对咨询者的信任、承认和接纳，将会使他们相信咨询者说的话、提出的建议和措施，相信咨询者能够帮助他们解决所面临的问题，因而会促使他们按照咨询者的建议和措施去做。
很多失败的咨询，都与咨询者的专家和权威身份没有得到来访者的承认和接纳有直接的关系。你会听到很多的来访者这样谈论他们遇到过的咨询者：“他（她）讲的还没有我讲的好”，“他（她）知道的还没有我知道的多”，“他（她）讲的那些道理我都明白”，或者“我的生活阅历比起他（她）来要丰富得多，要复杂得多，他（她）没法理解我的问题和心情”等等。当来访者这样评价他们的咨询者的时候，可以说咨询者的权威和专家身份没有得到他们的承认和接纳，那么他们就会对咨询者提出的咨询建议和措施持怀疑态度。这种怀疑态度将会影响到他们对咨询建议和措施的执行，特别是当他们做了一两次，感觉没有什么效果的时候，他们往往就会中断执行咨询建议和措施。
