2．我想要在这篇演讲中考虑的，是关于观念论（idealism）的一种反对意见。
如果我们要弄清楚思想和判断与思想之外的实在有关系这一点的意思，我们似乎就需要用外在于它们的实在对它们施加理性的限制。戴维森否认有任何这样的需要，并且提出我们只要有因果性的限制就够了。我的看法是，他能够设法接受这一点，只是因为他认为没有其他的选择，因为正如他清楚地认识到的那样，所与的神话是没有希望的。这里我认为他搞错了。还有另外的选择，而这个事实排除了否认对来自外部的理性限制的需要的惟一显然的理由：那个否认没有与直观相关的理性限制的思想将是空洞的这一点的惟一显然的理由。

Introduction

《心灵与世界》的主要内容是一种记录，记录的是1991年我在牛津大学夏季学期的洛克讲座上所做的演讲。我对这些演讲从原初的形式上做了一些改动。我试图在清晰度和明确性方面做出改进。我还去掉了像“下周”和“上周”这样的词，因为把这样的词放在一个要通过一口气读完才能理解的版本中似乎是荒谬的，也许——至少就这些演讲的正文而言情况是如此。篇演讲”）只是想要说出我在牛津演讲中所说的话。
