就其平常的意义而言，“群体”这个词指的是一伙聚集起来的个人，不管他们的民族、职业或性别是什么，也不管是什么样的机会使他们走到一起。然而从心理学的观点看，“群体”这个词便具有了完全不同的意义。在某些给定的环境下，且只在这些环境下，一群聚集起来的人呈现出新的特征，与组成这一群体的个人的特征大不相同。聚集中的所有人，他们的情绪和观念选择了同一个方向，他们的自觉人格消失了。一种集体的心理形成了，无疑是短暂的，但呈现出非常清晰的特征。这样聚集起来的人成为一个特殊的群体，由于没有更好的说法，我姑且称之为组织化群体，或者换个你可能认为更完美的说法，叫作心理群体。它形成了一个单独的存在，服从于群体的精神统一体的规律。
很明显，如果有很多人发现他们偶然凑到了一起，仅仅这一事实并没有使他们获得组织化群体的特征。成百上千个偶然在公共场所聚集到一起的个人，如果没有任何确定的目标，从心理学的观点看，无论如何也构不成一个群体。要获得这样一个群体的专门特征，必需有某些诱因的影响，接下来我们将确定这些诱因的性质。
自觉人格的消失，以及感情和思想都转向一个明确的方向，这些是一个即将成为组织化群体的人群所表现出来的最初特征，它们并不一定需要很多人同时出现在一个地点。成千上万孤立的个体，在某些瞬间，由于受到某些强烈情绪(比如全国性的大事件)的影响，也有可能获得心理群体的特征。在这种情况下，仅仅一个偶然性的事件，就足以让他们为了行动而聚集到一起，而他们的行为立即表现出群体行为所特有的那些特征。在某些时刻，三五成群的个体就可以构成一个心理群体，而成百上千个偶然聚集起来的人，却不会出现这样的现象。另一方面，整个民族，尽管不可能出现有形的聚集，但在某些影响的作用下，也可能成为一个群体。
一个心理群体一旦形成，它就获得了某些暂时的、但十分明确的一般特征。除了这些一般特征之外，还有一些专门特征，依据其组成成分的差异而各不相同，而且可能会改变群体的心理结构。因此，心理群体是可以分类的。当我们专注于这个问题的时候，我们应该看到，异质群体(即由不同成分组成的群体)呈现出某些与同质群体(即群体的组成成分多少有些相似：宗教、地位和阶层)相同的特征，而且，除了这些共同特征之外，还有各自专有的特征使这两种群体能够区分开来。
但是，在关注不同种类的群体之前，我们必须首先考察所有群体共有的特征。我们应该像博物学家那样着手工作，博物学家总是首先描述某个科的所有成员共有的一般特征，然后再关注那些把该科所包含的不同属、种区别开来的专有特征。
