（一）主流心理学的科学观
在阐述主流心理学的科学观之前，有必要对科学的产生和科学观的形成作一简要回顾。
古希腊哲学一直奉行实体还原论或理智主义的传统，这种实体还原论的哲学追求用单一的“实体本原”“一般”来说明整个宇宙，认为只要把握了宇宙的这种终极实体就把握了宇宙的统一、永恒的本质，从而也就最终地说明了世界。、在近代，这种理智主义哲学传统终于找到了自然科学这种表达形式。伴随着资本主义生产方式的产生和发展，自然科学尤其是数学和物理学首先从宗教神学中摆脱出来，成为独立的科学领域，并且在实践中取得了巨大的成就。在这些成就的鼓舞下，人们试图在所有的知识领域贯彻自然科学的精神和方法，著名科学史家丹皮尔称19世纪为“科学的世纪”，在这个时代里，人们对于自然和宇宙的整个观念改变了，因为我们认识到人类与其月围的世界，一样服从相同的物理定律与过程，不能与世界分开来考虑。而观察、归纳、演绎与实验的科学方法，不但可应用于纯科学原来的题材，而且在人类思想与行为的各种不同领域里差不多都可以应用。”④社会哲学家孔德采用科学的二分法，将科学分为“自然科学”和“社会科学”，他认为社会科学与自然科学具有共同的方法论基础，因此他努力把使社会知识获得自然科学所具有的实证性质作为自己的使命。在他看来，真正科学的“社会学”就是“关于社会现象根本原则的实证研究”。

自从1998年《西方心理学的历史与体系》一书出版以后，我们一直计划出版一本配套的书，以帮助读者在更深入的层次上了解西方心理学，并在<西方心理学的历史与体系>再版修订之前，了解西方心理学的最新发展。现在这本<西方心理学研究新进展》就代表了我们在这方面作出的努力。
本书分为三编。第一编为西方心理学的方法论。读者在阅读了《西方心理学的历史与体系》之后，对西方心理学的历史轮廓有了一定的了解，但是对于西方心理学发展的深层次原因，仍然难以把握。所以，在这一编里，我们从分析西方心理学的哲学方法论入手，分析实证主义、现象学，解释学，范式论与西方心理学的关系，从理论上厘定现代西方心理学的哲学根基。第二编探讨与西方心理学的分裂与整合有关的问题。
