Book Abstract

1 理解药物在体内的作用方式
如果没有现代药店，今天的社会会是什么样子？药店“drugstore”的另一个英文单词是“pharmacy”，在英国和世界上其他一些地区，药店被称作“the chemist’s”。在药店里，我们能找到成千上万的化学物质，这些物质可以用来帮助我们改善健康、增进幸福，而且在这张挽救生命、改善生活的物质清单上，每年都有大量新的化合物被纳入为新成员。这些化合物可以给我们带来各种各样的好处：缓解痛苦、治疗过敏反应和胃肠不适、免除环境危害、治愈传染性疾病、减轻身体疼痛、治疗动物咬伤和化学物质中毒等等。
药物（drug）并不仅仅指这些与健康有关的物质，而是涵盖了比这多得多的化学物质。药物还包括众多用于娱乐或者说非医疗目的的天然或人造产品，这类化学物质能够改变人的意识，使人从现实世界中暂时解脱出来。这些化合物包括兴奋剂、镇静剂和致幻剂。
