当今，人类的健康和生活质量正饱受心脑血管疾病、癌症、糖尿病及其并发症的威胁，特别是糖尿病正以星火燎原之势在全球蔓延。据国际糖尿病联合会统计，目前全球糖尿病患者约有2.85亿，另有超过3.44亿人有可能因为遗传、肥胖和不良生活方式患上2型糖尿病。预计到2030年全球将有5亿人患糖尿病。我国是全球糖尿病人数增长速度最快的国家之一，在20世纪80年代初，我国糖尿病患病率仅为0.67%，而2008年中华医学会糖尿病学分会（CDS）的统计数据显示糖尿病患病率已增至9.7%，而糖尿病的后备人群--糖尿病前期人群的比例更高达15.5%。更为严重的是，60.7%的患者未能得到诊断，约75%已诊断的患者治疗不达标。
我国糖尿病患者众多，加之低诊断率、低达标率所致的重要器官损毁，已经构成对我国居民严重的生存威胁并给社会带来沉重负担。防治糖尿病，应当立刻行动！我们作为糖尿病领域的专业人士，有责任拿起手中的笔，把我们的专业知识作为抗击糖尿病的有力武器。
