《中国炼丹术与丹药》是一部丹药制作与应用的专著，共分上、下篇及附篇三部分。上篇总论：包括有中国炼丹术的发生与发展、中国古代炼丹家的目的、古代炼丹场合的内容一斑、古代文献中最早见的丹药记载、中国古代炼丹术的文献试探、中国炼丹术的术语、临炉前的准备工作等八个章节，把中国炼丹术的发生、发展情况和主要内容作了扼要介绍。下篇各论：分别叙述了氯化汞、硫化汞、氧化汞三个独特内型中的典型丹药，同时叙述了升丹、降丹、烧丹，对丹四个类型中的丹药方剂140余个，把师传、友授及各有关文献中比较实际而有意义的丹药方剂分门别类地归纳起来，并在每一类型丹药方后附以简表以资参考。附篇“编后琐言”：把以前各章未谈到或已谈见详而又必须提出再谈的一些琐碎问题均在这一篇中逐条做出交代，使读者阅读之后可以体会到丹药的制法和运用。
本书所载丹药制备等内容具有较高的文献价值，而其中丹药方剂对于今天临床仍然具有较高实用的价值，本书对于我们学习中医外科及了解丹道医学具有重要意义。

上篇总论
第二章中国古代炼丹家的目的
中国古代的炼丹家和外国古代炼丹家有着不同的目的。欧洲炼丹家的目的，是在“点铁成金”，把贱金属怎样来变成贵重金属；中国炼丹家的目的，则是在“长生不死”，但其间也有不少是以“炼黄白”为目的者。因此，中国炼丹者，与欧洲炼丹者思想出发点各有不同。可是，也有个别人不是片面追求“点铁成金”或“长生不死”，而是追求“腰缠十万贯，骑鹤下扬州”的富贵仙兼而有之迷梦。当封建社会发展到一定阶段，生产力有了一定提高，统治阶级的物质享受大有增加时，那些帝王和贵族们便自然而然地产生出“长生不死”和“多财多富”的欲望。秦皇、汉武身为天子，还想长生不死，来延续他万世万代的基业，就是其中的典型例子。上有好者下必甚焉，于是有的人便应运而生，投机取巧，大搞炼丹术，为统治者服务。这在我国古代和外国古代都十分相似，也是炼丹术兴起、发展的一定规律。在我国最有名最有成就的炼丹家，要算晋朝时的葛洪。他承袭了早期的炼丹理论，结合起儒道家思想，和运用道家的势力，留下了完整的著作《抱朴子》。因此，他竞成为中国历史上的杰出人物，不仅在国内引起了人们的注意，而且在国外研究化学史的人们也非常注意他，而稽考他的生平和他的著作。有的学者认为亚拉伯第8世纪时的炼丹家盖伯（Geber）就是受了葛洪影响很深的人，因此，我们对葛洪的生平和他的著作都应有所了解。
