第一章概论
第一节经方与桂枝
“经方者，本草石之寒温，量疾病之浅深，假药味之滋，因气感之宜，辨五苦六辛，致水火之齐，以通痹解结，反之于平”（《汉书·艺文志》）。这是最早的关于“经方”的记载。这里所说的“经方”其实是指一首有效的方剂应该具有的组成和功效，而且要经得起反复的验证，能够经久不衰的方剂，才可称之为“经方”。在当时的汉代，具有这样功能和药物组成的方剂被冠以“经方”之名，其组成必然是严谨的、配伍必然是周匝的、药物必然是精练的，而且也可以想象这样的“经方”在当时就已经是口碑极佳，如同现代的家庭“必备药”。
“经方”在当时是有一定数量的，只有这样它才能保障整个中华民族的繁衍和生息。东汉．班固《汉书·艺文志》里曾记载“经方十一家”，至少说明当时的“经方”分成了十一类别，用于治疗十一个方面的疾病，相当于现代不同科别或系统的用药和治疗方法。既然已经形成了效方达药，被编成“经方”分类流传，也说明当时医疗体系具有相当的规模，中医学的发展已达到了一定的高度。但由于历史的原因，能流传至今的“经方”，我们大部分只能在《伤寒杂病论》中窥见了。所以，现代称为“经方”的方剂是专门指《伤寒论》和《金匮要略》流传下来的方剂。
《伤寒论》和《金匮要略》两书的“经方”并非都是张仲景独创，而且当时“经方”的缩影。在《伤寒论》张仲景原序里，张仲景说到“勤求古训，博采众方”，即把当时的“经方”通过自己的消化吸收，编撰在自己的著作之中，而且都是灵验之方。

本书对经方主药——桂枝进行了系统的研究。“经方”现在统指东汉张仲景《伤寒杂病论》的方剂，方虽只252首，但却影响了后世1800年的处方用药，并且还将继续影响下去。张仲景所集之方是历经千年经久不衰之方，古往今来，许多名方、效方无不是从经方演化而来。张仲景的学术思想是后世各学派的根基，而后世各学派的理论源泉也都要追溯到张仲景。正因为如此，张仲景才被称之为“医圣”，张仲景之书才被冠以“方书之祖”。桂枝是张仲景“气化理论”和“致中和思想”的体现和运用，桂枝是张仲景“善言气者，必彰于物”的实施者。桂枝的本草变迁印证了中医的发展，桂枝的配伍运用代表了一类方剂的配伍规律，桂枝折射出了医药共荣和方药共荣现象。桂枝为“百药之长”，是中医主流学派——“伤寒学派”的代表药物，历来为各代医家所重视，通过桂枝的研究可以折射出中医的发展。桂枝能温扶阳气，散邪外出，可以说桂枝是中医“正气存内邪不可干”的发病观的具体实施。其在东汉末年“伤横天之莫救”的年代里，在《伤寒论》中的广泛应用给人以启示，研究桂枝的配伍规律对现代传染性疾病的防治具有积极的意义。通过对桂枝配伍环境等因素的历史比较研究，我们从中能学到张仲景重视气化理论以及致中和的辨证施治思想和配伍精髓。开展桂枝配伍规律的研究，对现代许多慢性疾病（如肺心病、糖尿病、冠心病、肿瘤、风湿免疫性疾病等）的治疗也具有现实意义。
