计算机的存储器就像人的大脑，可以存储大量的数据，以备运算所需。
4）高性能的判断力
计算机具有强大的逻辑推理能力、判断能力和记忆能力，人工智能机的开发将会进一步提高其推理、判断、思维、学习、记忆与积累的能力，从而可以获得人脑更多的功能。
5）工作自动化
只要事先设计好程序，计算机就能按照用户的要求自动进行作业（工作）。
2.计算机的类型
计算机可以根据其自身的不同特点及功能进行各种分类。
1）按工作原理分
计算机按工作原理可分为数字计算机、模拟计算机、数模（混合）计算机。“数字”和“模拟”指计算机内部所采用的运算量的形式，不同的运算量形式决定了计算机内部运算电路的不同。数字计算机采用不连续的数字量进行计算；模拟计算机用连续的模拟物理量电压或电流进行计算；混合计算机将数字计算机和模拟计算机的优点结合起来，混合运用上述两种运算量。
2）按功能和用途分
计算机按功能和用途可分为专用计算机、通用计算机。专用计算机是为某种特殊用途而设计的，在这种特殊的用途下，它显得高效、经济。通用计算机则可用于多种用途，只要配备适当的软件和硬件接口，便可胜任各种工作。
3）按机器指令的复杂度分
计算机按机器指令的繁简、复杂度可分为复杂指令计算机（CISC）、简化指令计算机（RISC）。
4）按性能和规模分
计算机按性能和规模可分为巨型计算机、大型计算机、中型计算机、小型计算机、微型计算机和单片机6大类。它们的区别在于体积、复杂性、运算速度、数据存储容量、指令系统规模和机器价格等方面。一般说来，巨型计算机主要用于科学计算，其运算速度在每秒几亿至千亿次以上，存储容量大，结构复杂，价格昂贵，其他各档计算机的结构规模和性能指标依次递减。最小的单片机则把计算机做在了一块半导体芯片上，使它可直接装在其他机器设备上进行数据处理和过程控制。
5）按品名分
计算机按品名可分为品牌机（国内、国外）、组装机（用户自己用散件拼装的微机）。
6）按兼容分
计算机按是否兼容可分为原装机、兼容机。通常兼容机指与某厂家生产的微机使用的硬件和软件相兼容。例如与PC机保持兼容的就叫做PC兼容机，与IBM80286相兼容的就叫做286兼容机。

教育部高等学校医药类计算机基础课程教学指导分委员会经过大量的国内外调查研究和讨论，制定了“高等学校医药类专业计算机基础课程教学基本要求”。其中作为必修课之一的“大学计算机基础（医药类专业）”要求以信息技术的基本知识为基础，以数据处理及医学应用为主线，以能力培养为目标来组织内容。
本书以学生为本，面向应用，倡导创新学习和自主学习，注重学生可持续发展能力的培养。本书结合编者多年实际教学经验，结合医学应用，以介绍基本知识为基础，以数据处理为主线编写而成。
