还记得几周前，老师一只手捧着一个正方形的盒子，另一只手端着一个普普通通的水杯走进了教室。同学们好奇地盯着正方形的盒子，猜想着盒子里面到底是什么好东西。
老师却非常冷静地让大家传递那个再普通不过的水杯。等大家都看过那个水杯，上课铃声响了。
老师抛出了一个出乎意料的问题：“大家知道，刚才你们看到的那个水杯是怎么生产出来的吗？”同学们七嘴八舌，各自说着全然不同的解答。有的同学说：“这个水杯是从工厂里生产出来的。”有的同学说：“这是工人叔叔打磨出来的。”也有的同学说：“这需要通过机器加工，才能够生产出这样的杯子。”
正当同学们争论不休的时候，老师将食指竖起，放在嘴唇上，用这样一个微妙的手势提醒全班同学安静下来。老师说道：“目前，大部分的杯子都是从工厂里生产出来的。生产的过程需要先制造模具，而后根据模具在流水线上加工生产。”同学们问道：“什么是模具呢？”老师停顿了一下，解答道：“模具是用来成型物品的工具。这种工具由各种零件构成，不同的模具由不同的零件构成。它主要通过所成型材料物理状态的改变来实现物品外形的加工，素有“工业之母”的称号。”

工厂生产水杯流程：
1.要做出水杯的模具（模具是用来成型物品的工具。这种工具由各种零件构成，不同的模具由不同的零件构成。它主要通过所成型材料物理状态的改变来实现物品外形的加工，素有“工业之母”的称号）。
2.根据做出的模具，在流水线上生产加工。流水线上需要有许多的工人，这些工人每天都需要重复上千次一模一样的操作。
3.经过后期微加工形成我们所熟悉的水杯。
就在这个时候，小比特记得特别清楚。老师突然话锋一转，“大家知道吗？
过去这么复杂的生产流程，现在只需要老师装在这个小盒子里的设备就可以把杯子生产出来了！”
同学们半信半疑，很多同学小声地嘀咕道“不是要在工厂里才能生产出来吗？”“不是需要模具吗？”“不是还要有流水线和工人吗？”“对啊，为什么只要这个小盒子里的设备就可以了？”同学们的内心充满了各种各样的疑惑，小比特也不例外。
正当同学们瞪大了眼睛的时候，老师掀开了那个神秘的纸盒，三维打印机呈现在所有人面前！“哇，哇，哇！”
“这就是三维打印机，通常也称为3D打印机，这台小机器可以直接把杯子“打印”出来！不需要模具，不需要生产流水线，不需要流水线上的工人！”
“那它是如何做到的呢？”
“只需要在电脑上将三维打印的三维模型设计好。而后连接上三维打印机，就可以把杯子制造出来了！”老师娓娓道来。
“真的吗？”同学们半信半疑地望着老师。
“老师来演示一下。”同学们盯着老师的一举一动。老师先是在电脑上绘制了一个简单的三维模型，看上去像一个杯子。而后，老师将三维模型保存到了U盘里，又将U盘插入了三维打印机。启动三维打印机，打印机就开始工作了。
打印机的喷头先是停顿了一会儿，教室里安静极了。听见了打印机轻微地读盘声响。
“嘀！”一声响后，打印机的喷头上开始吐出丝状的物体。就这样，连续不断地吐出丝来，这些丝状物体在高温喷头的作用下，融化成粘稠的液体状，喷出后又迅速凝固成固体。打印就这样一层层地往上叠加。
老师说道：“像这样一个小杯子，打印需要两个小时。”
小比特静静地望着讲台上的三维打印机。这是他第一次遇见三维打印机，第一次看着三维打印机神奇地创造物体。小比特多想有一天也能够和这台神秘的三维打印机一起创造各种各样的事物。
